INTRODUCTION TO
WASTE MANAGEMENT
 Waste management is the precise name for
the collection,transportation,disposal or
recycling and monitoring of waste. This
term is assigned to the material, waste
material that is produced through human
being activity. This material is managed to
avoid its adverse effect over human health
and environment.
 A large portion of waste management practices
deals with “municipal solid waste”. Which is the
bulk of the waste that is created by household,
industrial, and commercial activity.
 Waste is produced by human activity, for
example, the extraction and processing of raw
materials.
 Waste management is the process of treating solid
wastes and offers variety of solutions for recycling
items that don’t belong to trash.
IMPORTANCE OF WASTE
MANAGEMENT
 Waste collection and rubbish disposal play an extremely
important role in the global cleanliness and sustainability
drive, with peoples health and the conservation of resources
being the responsibility of every government.

 The most important reason for waste collection is the

protection of the environment and the health of the
population.

 One should always dispose waste properly which if practiced

by every individual will lead to an adverse effect on our
environment as well as our surroundings.
 Planning the waste management and recycling for all of
the rubbish produced in this country is an enormous
task.

 Waste management and recycling companies are also

feeling an extra pressure to perform their role in the
greenest ways possible.

 The most important reason for waste collection is the

protection of the environment and the health of the
population.
TYPES OF WASTE
MANAGEMENT
o SOLID WASTE
o LIQUID WASTE
o GASEOUS WASTE
o E-WASTE
o HOUSEHOLD WASTE
o BIOMEDICAL WASTE
o HAZARDOUS WASTE
 SOLID WASTE
 Solid waste is commonly called ‘garbage’.
 It includes only non-liquid wastes.

Three types of solid waste

• House hold waste
• Hazardous waste
• Biomedical waste

Solid waste disposal

1. On-site disposal
2. Composting
3. Incineration
4. Open dumps
5. Sanitary landfills
WASTE WATER MANAGEMENT
GASEOUS WASTE
 The gaseous wastes are generated in to
environment mainly due to anthropogenic
activities. The gaseous wastes include carbon
dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbon, oxides of
nitrogen, carbon monoxide etc.
 These gaseous wastes can cause serious
environmental hazards. Therefore, it is highly
essential to take appropriate steps for the proper
management and control of gaseous waste in the
environment.
E-WASTE
EFFECTS OF E-WASTE
 ON ENVIRONMENT
1. Pollution of ground water.
2. Acidification of soil.
3. Air Pollution.

 ON HUMAN HEALTH
1. DNA Damage
2. Lung cancer
3. Chronic damage to the brain.
 TREATMENT OPTIONS OF E-WASTE
• Landfilling
• Incineration

 TECHNOLOGY CURRENTLY USED IN

INDIA.
• Dismentaling
• Density seperation
HOUSEHOLD WASTE
HOUSEHOLD WASTE
BIOMEDICAL WASTE
 “Bio-medical waste” means any waste, which is
generated during the diagnosis,treatment or
immunisation of human beings or animals or in
research activities or in the production or testing
of biologicals.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
 Consist
of toxic substances that are of
chemical nature
 Highly
dangerous to human,plant,animals
and the overall environment.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
MANAGEMENT
Minimizing
Collection & Packaging
Labelling
Storage
Disposal
3R’s OF WASTE MANAGEMENT
METHODS OF WASTE
DISPOSAL
MERITS OF WASTE
MANAGEMENT
1. Practice is highly lucrative
2. Keeps the environment clean and fresh
3. Saves the Earth and conserves energy
4. Reduces environmental pollution
5. Waste management will help you earn
money
6. Creates employment
DEMERITS OF WASTE
MANAGEMENT
1. The process is not always cost-
effective
2. The resultant product has a short life
3. The sites are often dangerous
4. The practices are not done uniformly
5. Waste management can cause more
problems
