movement of Earth’s surface
 The plates collide, pull apart, and
slide past each other.
• Plates are made of rigid
lithosphere ,which is 100 km(60
miles) thick.
• It is composed of continental
plates and oceanic plates.
• Asthenosphere is below Lithosphere that
extends from about 100 km (60 mile) to
about 700 km (450 miles).
 Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of
continental drift or in modern plate
tectonics developed from 1950’s to
1970’s.
 There are 14 major tectonic plates
7 Most important plates are:
 African plate
 Antarctic plate
 Australian plate
 Eurasian plate
 North American plate
 South American plate
 Pacific plate
 There are 38 plates

 Altiplano , Amurian, Anatolian, Burma,


Banda Sea, etc.

 Iberian, Adria, Turkish, Black Sea,


etc.,
