EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE
WHAT IS GUIDANCE
O The process of helping individuals to
understand themselves and their world.
O The assistance given to “normal
students.” (those who need help with the
events and concerns that occurs during
normal development)

opportunities of the situation confronting

WHAT IS GUIDANCE

consists in the appraisal of the abilities,
interests, and needs of individual pupils in
order to counsel them concerning their
problems, to aid them in formulating plans for
realizing their capabilities, and to assist them
in making decisions and the adjustments
which will promote their well-being in school,

O Guidance, as most educators perceive, is a
form of teaching that anyone can avail of
anytime. A lifelong process, guidance should
be positive and preventive rather than
curative.

II. LEGAL BASES OF EDUCATIONAL
GUIDANCE
1. 1987 Constitution, Article XIV
Section 3 (2)
States that “all educational institution shall
inculcate patriotism and nationalism, foster love of
humanity, respect for human rights, appreciation of
the role of national heroes in the historical
development of the country, teach the rights and
duties of citizenship, strengthen ethical and spiritual
values, develop moral character and personal
discipline, encourage critical and creative thinking,
broaden scientific and technological knowledge, and
promote vocational efficiency.”

2. Education Act of 1982 or R.A. 232

Provides that the “students have the right


to school guidance and counseling for
making decision and selecting the
alternatives in the field of work suited to
their potentialities”
III. PURPOSE OF GUIDANCE
A. Purpose of Guidance
1. Helps the individual achieve up to the
level of his own capacity, gain personal
satisfaction and makes his maximum
contribution to society.
2. Assists teachers in their efforts to
understand students.
3. Assists individuals to live well-balance
lives in all aspects.
4. Assists individuals to solve their
problems as they arise.

1. Family Situation – different definition
of families
2. Complexity of Living – mobility of
Filipinos (OFWs)
3. Increasing Possibility of Experiencing
Crisis – calamities, crimes, bullying,
etc.
IV. PRINCIPLES OF GUIDANCE
A. Principles of Guidance
1. Guidance is an integral part of the
educational system.
2. It is responsive to the student’s needs.
3. It is recognizes that every individual is unique
and is capable of making decisions and
actions.
4. The guidance program is in the hands of
qualified personnel.
5. A code of ethics is followed in guidance work
6. Disciplining is not part of guidance.

1. Group Guidance

A group activity in which the


primary purpose is to assist
each individual in the group
to solve problems and make
adjustments in life.

assistance in facing a situation

awareness and helps in the adjustment of foreign
students.

VII. ETHICAL PRINCIPLES

A. CODE OF ETHICS
The Code of Ethics in Guidance and Counseling are
based on the following fundamental principles
• Respecting human rights and dignity
• Respect for the client’s right to be self-governing
• A commitment to promoting the client’s well-being
• Fostering fair treatment of all clients and the
provision of adequate services
• Responsibility to the society
VII. ETHICAL PRINCIPLES
B. Confidentiality
1. Informs the counselee of the purposes, goals,
techniques and rules of procedure under which
she/he may receive counseling at or before the time
when the counseling relationship is entered.

2. Keeps information confidential unless disclosure is


required to prevent clear and imminent danger to
the counselee or others or when legal requirements
demand that confidential information be revealed.
Counselors will consult with other professionals
when in doubt as to the validity of an exception.
VII. ETHICAL PRINCIPLES
3. Protects the confidentiality of the counselee’s
records and release personal data only according
to prescribed laws and school policies. Students’
information maintained in computers is treated
with the same care as traditional student
records.
4. Protects the confidentiality of information
received by the counseling relationships as
specified by state laws, written policies and
applicable ethical standards.
5. Keeps tests and other assessment measures and
their results under lock and key.
VIII. Guidance within Education
Education is a priceless asset of
fundamental importance to the
individual and to society. It is a
process essential to the achievement
of personal goals and individual
aspirations.
