Rationale
To provide an overview of basic characterization of circuit/packet
switched telecommunications network with an impact of unified systems
view of the broad field of data and computer communications. The
fundamental principles of data communications are thoroughly presented
and then applied in data communication
networking.
Catalog Description
Data Communication Principle, OSI model and Protocols, Transmission
theory and its modes, Guided Transmission Media, Wireless (terrestrial
and satellite). Line Configurations, Data Link Control, Flow Control
Techniques, Error control techniques, Packet and switched networks,
Radio Networks, Network Topologies, LAN Architecture, Multiplexing, IP
addressing.

I. DCN and Protocol Architecture:


Need for Protocol, Simple Protocol Architecture, ISO, OSI seven layer
model, TCP/IP protocol suit,

II. Data Transmission:


Frequency and Time Domain, Fourier Series, Frequency, spectrum and
Bandwidth, Transmission Impairments, Nyquist Criteria, Shannon
Theorem, SNR and Eb/N0

III. Signal Encoding Techniques:


Unipolar, Polar, Bipolar, PAM, PCM, Performance Issue

IV. Digital Data Communication Techniques:


Synchronous and Asynchronous Transmission, Circuit Switching and
Packet Switching

V. Data Link control Protocol:


Stop and Wait Flow Control, Sliding window Flow Control, Stop and Wait

Frequency division multiplexing, Time division multiplexing, Digital
Carrier Systems

VII.LAN Architecture:
