ART APPRECIATION

Daniel Bryan R. Hoyumpa

Functions of Art
• Personal
Utilitarian - Art that can be used
for function. It is valued for it's beauty and
design but can be used to hold water,
store items, tell the time, arrange/ hold
back hair styles, light a room. Some might
call it craft.
Public Display - Display and Celebration
a statues and sculpture commemoration of
the great people in the land almost all
parks in the country had the statue of Rizal
Imagine Edsa and the mural erected in the
place b. Rituals and festivals employ arts
be it Christmas, holy week, and any other
celebrations
Expression - Expression in the creation
of art. The creation of a work of art is the
bringing about of a new combination of
elements in the medium (tones in music,
words in literature, paints on canvas, and
so on).
• Social - The visual arts, like the
other arts can function as languages of
praise and celebration, anger and protest,
satire and ridicule. In other
words, art can influence the attitudes of
people in groups, affecting the way they
think or feel and, ultimately, the way they
act.
• Physical - The physical functions of
art are often the easiest to understand.
Works of art that are created to perform
some service have physical functions.
Architecture, crafts such as welding and
woodworking, interior design, and
industrial design are all types of art that
serve physical functions.
Visual Arts
• Dance – It has been so predominant in its
position that some textual sources stress
that sculptors and painters cannot
succeed in their work without a basic
knowledge of it. The Natyashastra sets the
physical and dramatic tools for evoking the
rasa or the emotional state appropriate to
worship.
• Literary Arts - Relate to the written word
and include writing, editing, critiquing,
teaching, reviewing, and other activities
related to written communication. These
activities take place in a variety of settings,
such as classrooms, writers'
workshops/centers, book and magazine
publishing companies, and libraries.
• Film - An art film is typically a serious,
independent film, aimed at a niche market
rather than a mass market audience.
