What is Endogamy?
• etymologically, endogamy came
from the English word “endo”
which means “within” and the
Greek word “gamos” which
means “marriage”.
What is Endogamy?
• Endogamy is also called in-
marriage and is the custom of
marrying within one's cultural
group or clan. This requirement was
created to keep health, culture, and
ethnicity within cultural groups.
Historically, endogamy has been
associated with aristocracy,
religious groups, ethnic groups, and
social classes.
Causes of Endogamy
• Policy of Separation. Some
people does not want to live
with other people of outside
group. They consider
themselves pure while others
impure.
Causes of Endogamy
• Accumulation of wealth. Some
people practice endogamy so
that wealth will remain within
the same family.
Example: Marriage within close
Chinese families
Causes of Endogamy
• Sense of superiority and
inferiority. People of one group
consider themselves superior
and others inferior.
Example: Endogamy in the Caste
System of India
Causes of Endogamy
• Religious Differences. Religious
differences also compel a
person to practice endogamy,
for the reason that one
religious belief within a
marriage means a united
couple.
Causes of Endogamy
• Racial and cultural
similarity. There are some racial
and cultural similarity in two
groups or castes. These
similarities allow a person to
practice endogamy.
Causes of Endogamy
• Geographical Separation. People
practice endogamy for this
reason because they are after
the reason of distance.
Advantages of Endogamy
• maintains the unity within the
group and creates the “we-
feeling”.
• maintains the purity of blood.
• no superiority and inferiority of
the two partners to each other
Advantages of Endogamy
• wealth goes to the same family
• women feel satisfaction due to
the prior understanding in that
family and have no new
situation
Disadvantages of Endogamy
• choice of partner selection is
very limited
• creates hatred and jealousy
with other groups
• creates ethnocentric behavior
