 WHAT IS HISTORICAL
APPROACH & WHERE IS
IT USED?
Four step in utilizing this
approach
1. Discovering the time when the poem was made, what
happened to the author in that time.
2. Analyzing at glance whether it is connected or not between
the content of the literary work.
3. Finding the clues left by the author , usually in the forms of
special terms, symbols, or figurative language which are
strongly related to the moment of the past which become the
inspiration of the literary work was being made.
4. Interpreting the literary work based on the moment
underlying the creation of it.
The characteristics of
historical approach
 Historical research involves the careful study and analysis
of data about past events.
 It is a critical investigation of events, development and
experiences of past.
 The purpose is to gain a clearer understanding of the impact
of the past on present and future events related to life process.
 Involves the review of written materials but may include oral
documentation as well.
Historical approach design

 Analyzing the past events and develop the present concept

and conclusion.
 Analyzing the previous information or events minutely
and testing their validity.
 The purpose of historical approach is to collect, verify, and
synthesize evidence from the past.
 Describe what occurred in the past.
 Depends upon data observed by other rather than
investigator.

Historical and biographical Approaches in Practice in Hamlet .

 In view of Queen Elizabeth's advanced age and poor health-hence

the precarious state of the succession to the British crown-
Shakespeare's decision to mount a production of Hamlet, with its
usurped throne and internally disordered state, comes as no surprise.
(Edward Hubler has argued that Hamlet was probably written in
1600 1912,n.21.)
