EARTH COMPACTING

EQUIPMENTS

Presented by:
HARIS WAJEEH
Compaction
It is the process of removal of entrapped air from the
soil in order to make it more dense.
Though soil will compact by itself naturally, but the
process is very slow and it may take it many years to
reach a desired density.
The devices used to compact soil quickly up to the
desired density are called Earth Compaction
Equipments.
Objectives
To reduce or prevent settlement

To increase the strength of Soil

To improve bearing capacity

To lower the permeability of Soil.

Soil Compaction can be achieved by
applying energy using the following
methods:
 By pressure static weight
 By kneading
 By impact sharp blows

 By vibration shaking
COMPACTING
ROLLERS
TYPES OF ROLLERS
 Smooth wheel roller

 Sheep foot roller

 Pneumatic roller

 Tamping roller

 Mesh roller

 Vibrating drum roller

Smooth-wheel roller (drum)
 These rollers usually
contain 3 rollers, 1 in the
front and 2 in the rear.
 Weight varies from 5.5 to
24 tonnes.
 Contact pressure =380kPa
 Useful for compaction of
cohesive soils and asphalt
pavements. Can be used
on all soil types except for
rocky soils.
Sheep foot rollers
 Has many round or
rectangular shaped
protrusions or “feet”
attached to a steel drum
 Contact pressure is from
1400 to 7000 kPa
 It is best suited for clayed
soils.
 Weight=35 tonnes
 Speed varies from 6.4 to
9.6 kmph.
Pneumatic (or rubber-tired) roller
 Contact pressure up to
700 kPa
 Can be used for both
granular and fine-
grained soils.
 Compactive effort:
static weight and
kneading.
 Can be used for
highway fills or earth
dam construction.
Tamping foot roller
• Contact pressure is
from 1400 to 8400 kPa
• It is best for
compacting fine-
grained soils (silt and
clay).
• Compaction effort:
Kneading Action.
• 20 to 30 cm thick soil
can be compacted in 2
to 3 passes.
Mesh (or grid pattern) roller
 Contact pressure is
from 1400 to 6200 kPa
 It is ideally suited for
compacting rocky soils,
gravels, and sands.
With high towing speed,
the material is vibrated,
crushed, and impacted.
 Compactive effort: static
weight and vibration.
Vibrating drum on smooth-wheel roller
 Vertical vibrator attached
to smooth wheel rollers.
 Due to cyclic deformation
of the soil produced by the
oscillations of the roller,
particle rearrangement
occurs, which in turn leads
to densification of the soil.
 Compactive effort: static
weight and vibration.
 Suitable for granular soils
Vibrocompaction
• The objective in Vibro-compaction is to achieve densification of
coarse grained soils.
• Vibration is created in a vertical mode.
• Compaction is achieved by the use of vibratory pile driving
apparatus
• During the driving in and extraction of the pile the densification of
soil takes place.
