Area and

volume of
a prism
What is prism ?

• Prism is a polyhedron which is formed

when a closed prismatic surface is cut b
y two parallel planes.
• the faces formed by the parallel planes
are called bases.

• the other faces between the bases are

called lateral faces

• and the intersections of the lateral faces

are called lateral edges.
How to calculate the surface of a
prism?
• The total area of a prism is the total
area of all its external faces.

1. Determine the shape of each face.

2. Calculate the area of each face.

3. Add up all the areas to get the total surface

area.
