2. 2019
SD-WAN

is a software-defined wide area network, an application of software-defined networking technology that simplifies WAN
(Wide Area Network) management by decoupling network hardware from control mechanisms. SD-WANs are also quicker
to establish and reconfigure, since the network becomes a logical layer, compared to all the overhead and latency of
implementing a traditional hard-wired physical network.
3. Autonomous Things
“Autonomous things” is an emerging term for technologies that are bringing computers into the physical environment
operating as autonomous entities without human direction. Technologies combining AI, drones, and other tech, into the
following categories: vehicles, drones, appliances, agents and robotics.
4. Augmented Analytics
Increased automation in analytics, thanks to machine learning and AI being applied to Business Intelligence (BI), is
resulting in the evolution of business analytics from being descriptive to predictive and prescriptive analytics.
5. 5G
5G is finally here and expected to roll out on a wider scale in 2019. 5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile
communications, following the 4G (LTE/WiMax), 3G (UMTS), and 2G (GSM) systems. 5G represents a fundamental shift in
communication network architectures, promising more bandwidth with lower latency

World’s First 5G Service Starts in Korea

Top 5 three
• The Emerging Technologies
major carriers, Impacting
SK Telecom, Korea Telecom and LG U+. officially started 5G
service at mid-night of April 3 in order to secure the “world’s first” title ahead of

service opened to a limited number of people not general public in Korea. 5G service to
public starts from April 5th.
• The number of handset subscriber in Korea reached 57.2 million as of January 2019.
Smartphone penetration rate was 89% at the same time. 24 million smartphone
subscribers contracted with SK Telecom, accounting for 47% of total smartphone
subscriptions in Korea. KT accounts for 30% and LG U+ accounts for 23% of
subscriptions in the market.
• Only four 5G smartphone models will be available in Korea in 2019. Samsung Galaxy
S10 5G and LG V50 ThinQ are coming in April 2019, the same month of 5G service
commercialization starts. Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected in May followed by Samsung
Galaxy Note 10 in September in 2019.
• 10 million units of 5G smartphone shipment in 2019 is expected to grow 366 million
units in 2022.

2 5G Technology
5G is …
There are 2 schools of thoughts:
From 1G to 5G  Evolutionary: create a blend of
existing technologies to allow
Generation Services
higher coverage, capacity,
1G Analogue phone calls availability and network density
 Revolutionary: create new
2G Digital phone calls + messaging generation radio technology by
setting specific data rates and
3G Digital calls, messaging + data latency; this is the most
3.5G Digital calls, messaging, data + broadband traditional way of defining a next
Internet generation of mobile technology

4G All-IP based mobile broadband

5G Enhanced broadband + industry

5G Driver

Opportunities:
• Create broadband service with very high speed up
to 20 Gbps
• Deliver Massive IoT up to 1 million connections/km2
• Deliver ultra reliable and low latency service with
1ms latency and 10-9 error rate.
• Lower the cost of delivering data.

Challenges:
• New spectrum/frequency
• Need large capital and operating costs (number of
BTS, transport, BHP frequency)
• Finding best fitted use cases for Telkom and
customers
• Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB): seamless user experiences from 3G/4G to 5G
• Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (uRLLC): stringent requirements: throughput, latency,
and availability; e.g. wireless control of industrial manufacturing process, remote surgery, distribution
automation in a smart grid, transportation safety, etc.
• Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC): connecting a very large number of IoT devices
5G Key Technology

New air interface and spectrum are needed: sub-6GHz and mmWave are strong
candidates, and this is where the action is...

• The radio channel models that are currently in wide use, for example WINNER and ITU IMT
Advanced, have been developed to match the needs of 3G and 4G mobile networks; consequently,
from several radio propagation aspects, they are not suitable for 5G

• To support emerging new scenarios and applications for 2020 and beyond-- including enhanced
broadband, ultra-reliable and low latency communications, and MTC, all presented earlier in this
report--new technologies and functionalities are required, and the development of a new air
interface is necessary

• However, the minimum technical requirements (and corresponding evaluation criteria) to be

defined by ITU-R based on these capabilities for IMT-2020 could potentially be met by adding
enhancements to existing IMT, incorporating new technology components and functionalities such
as Massive MIMO, beamforming, and active antennas
mmWaves address Shannon’s law

C = B.log2 (1+ (S/N))

 LTE-A achieves increasing B

through carrier aggregation
 256QAM address the S/N issue
 How far can we go?
Proposing Unused Spectrum
• Licensed spectrum for cellular networks has become scarce and
saturated; consequently, the industry is looking at new unused
spectrum with very large channels—B in Shannon’s law

• In existing bands, channels are 5MHz up to 20MHz wide

• In above 6GHz frequencies, channels can be wider than 100MHz,

which in turn deliver huge multi-Gbps throughputs and very low
latency

Network Transformation
3
of 5G
5G aims at being UE Centric

As 5G aims at being UE centric, the architecture will require the separation of system
control plane and data transmission

• In addition to the new air interface, an “only transmit when needed” functionality that
minimizes any transmission not directly related to the delivery of the user data will be
needed
– This concept was introduced as “ultra-lean design” in 2015; on the other hand, the
system-control plane includes the provisioning of system information, including
procedures needed for devices to access the system
• Combining ultra-lean design with a logical separation of user plane data delivery and basic
system connectivity functionality will enable a much higher degree of user-centric network
optimization of the active radio links in the network
