• EDP was headed by Joe Bennett until 1990, when he passed away at age of 42
• Bennett was determined, self driven and very authoritative in managing his activities
• Don Rogers replaced Bennett after his death as the new General manager of the company
• Many felt he was not qualified and his management style was not so appropriate and
attracted many criticism.
• After Rogers took over the company, EDP is facing many problems including a decline in
sales, performance, morale and coordination among department.
What’s the problem with the Electronic Product Division (EPD) of the
Allentown Materials Corporation?
• EDP department mission and goals not set as per logical reasoning
• Rogers is unable to motivate employees to push them to meet the goals
• Ability is there for new product development, but lack of leadership to make the move on time
• Roger is very conservative and does not want to take risk
• Morale within and across department is low
• Informal communication is also problem for lack of coordination between departments
• Fierce competition
• Lack of Cohesiveness
• Slow Product Development
• Logistics & supply chain is weak and unable to handle customer expectations
• Lack of clarity on goals to be achieved with given targets
• Lack of mutual confidence and trust amongst departments like marketing, manufacturing and
sales
• Lot of conflicts between the teams because of different ideas and goals
What is your recommendation ? Justify.
• There should be only one goal to achieve, so that all department would understand the goals,
come together to reach and complete the goal
• Rogers need to take responsibility and work on his leadership skills
• Trust is an important element and every department the objective and work should be allotted
and carried out effectively so that there is no gap or mismatch for ineffective results
• Sales force should be incentivized based on commission to increase sales revenue
• Cross functional team should be set up so that each department can give an suggestion on new
product development and planning
• Freedom on Budget allocation to each of the department so that they meet the requirements
• Customer service level should be improved and feedback should be taken to gauge the
satisfactory levels
• For fostering collaborative thinking, a common integrated system should be developed wherein
feedback from the clients regarding product specification and product quality should be
updated without any delay
