The First Week of

School
A Classroom Management Plan
Classroom Layout
I would not have an assigned
seating plan right from the
beginning. At first, I would give
students the option of sitting
where they like, however I
would make sure they are
aware that I may impose a
seating plan at any time if they
show they are not deserving of
this privilege.
Start-of-Day Procedures
• All students are required to wait in the hallway in
line before entering the classroom. I will meet and
greet them in the hallway, and they will enter the
room once I have told them to.
• Students will enter one-at-a-time and sit at their
seats, and look to the board for further instructions.
• A specific task will be written on the board before
the students enter the room. This is what they will
do as soon as they sit down.
– This task could be a reading for them to start, something
to start writing/answering in their notebooks, a minds-on
activity to begin, or something as simple as opening their
notebooks/textbooks to a certain spot and waiting.
Classroom Rules
• If you have to use the bathroom or get a drink,
raise your hand and ask me, then sign out on
the sheet and go. Only one person can be out
of the room for bathroom/drink break at a time.
• Cellphones are not to be used in class unless I
specifically say so. If you are using your phone
in class, you will be asked to bring it to the
front of the room where it will stay for the rest
of the period.
• If you don’t have a pencil or paper, you can
find spares in the baskets at the back of the
room.
• No food allowed in class. Drinks are allowed
only in sealed bottles.
Assignments and Notes
• All assignments are handed in either in the online google
classroom drop box OR in the physical drop box at the front of
the room. Due work is to be placed in the box before the start
of class.
• Any missed notes or handouts can be found in the bins on the
back bench, with dates on them. Students are to check these
bins before coming to me when they have missed class.
Lesson Procedure
• Students are expected to be attentive in class
and participate in activities as much are they
are able to.
• Class discussion is encouraged, but it must be
done in an orderly fashion. Students are
expected to raise their hands when they have
something to say, and wait until they are
called upon before speaking.
• For group work, groups will often be assigned
randomly, with a fun question or activity being
used to place students in groups.
– Example: Line up in the order of your Birthdays
Student Roles
• Certain students may be designated with
specific responsibilities that they are in
charge of throughout the year.

• At first, student roles will be chosen on a

volunteer basis. If students lose or surrender
their roles, I might use my knowledge of the
students to ask certain students if they would
like to take on the role.

• For Instance:
– In a rotary system, one student will be
the “attendance person” and will be
responsible for bring the attendance/sign-
out sheet from class to class.
– Two students will be in charge of getting
the technology cart and rolling it to class
when it is needed, and returning it
afterwards.
Safety
• If I have these students for science class, we will need to establish
safety procedures early on. Students must become familiar will all
science lab safety protocols before being allowed to participate.
• It will be made clear that students who show that they cannot
properly follow safety protocols will not be allowed to participate in
labs and will instead be given alternative assignments.
• All students must bring home a “Safety and Responsibility Contract”
that they and their guardians must read and sign before the student
is allowed to actively participate in any lab activities.
Day 1
• Introduce myself, give a short “presentation” of my life story,
let the get to know me a little.
• Go over the start-of-day procedures in detail.
• Talk about the class rules, discuss expectations.
• Introduce first activity:
– Students have to create some piece of art (drawing, song, poem, skit)
that tells a story about themselves (interests, life story, personality,
etc.) that they will eventually share with the class.

• Assign student roles

Day 2
• Go over an outline of what we will be doing over the course of
the term.
• Give students time to work on their activity.
• Science class!
• I will do a fun demonstration that they get to watch (ex.
Elephant toothpaste). Hopefully this will serve as a good hook
and give the idea that this class can be fun and interesting.
• Locate and discuss safety equipment (fire
extinguishers/blankets, eye wash, etc.), talk about lab safety
rules, hand out safety contracts.
Day 3
• Give the class a run through the different technologies we will
be using.
– Chromebooks, Google Classroom, etc.

• Begin lessons involving “real” material.

• Students will become familiar with lesson protocols, and
information regarding assignments and notebooks.
Day 4 & 5
• Students will get to present/share their first activities!
• The first science lab will be held, where most of the emphasis
will be placed on safety and proper procedure, but also on
having fun.
• Students will work on an assignment where they write about
their first week in class; what they learned, what they did, and
what they enjoyed.
End-of-Day/Class Procedures
• Students are expected to be in their seats working/reading
until the bell rings. No waiting at the door for the bell.
• At the end of the day, students are asked to put the chairs on
top of the desks before exiting the classroom.
