Improve Social Skills and Time Management Skills

Placement: EOF/MAP Office at Rowan University
Background

-Female African American

-First semester freshman in the EOF/MAP program

-mandatory Academic Coaching

- was on a sport club team at RU

- Resident Student
Problem Identification and
Assessment:
-The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) Student Report
was given and showed need for help with Time Management and
other academic skills

- Made an Academic Coaching Agreement and set goals

-I listened to student A’s expressed feelings and observed body


language when discussing social settings, talking to professors, and
asking for help. This all was concerning and I wanted to help her
improve social skills to benefit her school work.
Literature Review
Homework Assignments in Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy: A Meta-Analysis

By: Nikolaos Kazantzis, Frank P. Deane, and Kevin R. Ronan


- 31 studies were reviewed for this meta-anaylsis
- Homework assignments are used by counselors/therapists to change the student’s behavior in the absence of the
therapist supervision because it was shown to be beneficial during CBT
- Social skills training for adults was an example given in the article where homework assignments have been used and
helped the adults
- different types of homework assignments were shown to be better than continuously the same types
Intervention: CBT
Intervention Continued.

- supervisor observed a session and gave me a suggestion


to use small tasks with her and provided me with the
EOF/MAP to do list sheets which I started to use every
week
- To Do lists with required tasks for following week(s)
Time Mgt. Intervention

- gave her plans which she added in her Assignment Pad


- Time Mgt. worksheets and discussion after
- agreed on small tasks for each week to finish in order to
not feel overwhelmed
Assessment of Outcomes
-After many role plays in different sessions she was able to replace her
negative thoughts about talking to others and was able to get positive
experiences from talking to new people

-Did not need assistance texting Peer Coach to set up appointment, knew
what to say by herself, didn’t show any signs of nervousness

-spoke up to professor to ask for an extension

-when asked about her study plan she gave me ideas to improve her time mgt.
after working on a handout and knew what days she would be studying/doing
hw the following week

-made a goal to hang out less with her friends to get hw done

- shared decision about not participating in sport club this year and will do it
next year when she can focus more time to it. She wanted to give more time
to her studies this year
