IGNEOUS

ROCK

About the Igneous
➥Derived from the Latin word ignis meaning fire

➥One of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic.

➥Has 2 basic types:

- Intrusive igneous rocks ( INSIDE )

Crystallize below Earth's surface, and the slow cooling that occurs there allows large crystals to form.

- Extrusive igneous rocks ( OUTSIDE )

Erupt onto the surface, where they cool quickly to form small crystals. Some cool so quickly that they form an
amorphous glass.
Igneous rocks form from cooling
and crystallization of molten rock-
magma.
DEFINITION ●

Magma - Molten rock within the Earth
Lava - Molten rock on the Earth’s
surface

Igneous rocks form the framework

for the Earth’s crust
CLASSIFICATION
➥ Igneous rocks are classified
according to their composition and
texture.

4 basic types of textures:

Glassy – black and sharp

Fine grained – interlocking pieces

Coarse grained – consist of interlocking mineral crystals

Porphyritic – made of large crystals scattered on the back

of small crystals.
WHILE
EXTRUSIVE

As a result of quick or
rapid cooling, extrusive
igneous rock will have
small crystals or no
crystals at all.

Example: OBSIDIAN
DID YOU
KNOW?

Another name for an Extrusive

rock is a VOLCANIC rock

There are 700 different types of

igneous rock

The upper section of the Earth’s

crust is made of 95% igneous
rock
