2019-nCoV
• Also known as Wuhan Coronavirus
• Contagious virus causing respiratory infection
• Belong to the group of coronaviruses
• Probably zoonotic in origin (not confirmed)
• Genetic sequence is similar to SARS-CoV and bat coronavirus
• Jan. 30, 2020: WHO declare it as global health emergency
• As of Feb. 2, 2020, there were 14,549 confirmed cases of infection
of which 14,375 came from China (Wuhan)
As of Feb. 2, 2020, there were 305 deaths
2019-nCoV Epidemiology
• Early December 2019 – first known human infection
• Mid December 2019 – outbreak detected in Wuhan, China
• Animals sold for food suspected to be the reservoir or the
intermediary
• Many of the first identified infected were workers at Huanan Seafood
Market in China.
• Coronaviruses can also cause a variety of diseases in farm animals and
domesticated pets

• Transmission:
- Human to human transmission through respiratory droplets
from coughs and sneezes within a range of about 6 feet.
• Manifestation:
- Flu-like symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, breathing
difficulties
- In severe cases, may lead to PNEUMONIA, acute respiratory
syndrome, kidney failure and death

• No vaccines yet
• Preventive Measures
1. Practice frequent and proper handwashing
2. Cover mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue when
coughing or sneezing.
3. Move away from people when coughing (cough etiquette).

6. Drink plenty of water
7. Avoid unprotected contact with farm or wild animals
8. Ensure that food is well-cooked
9. Use of alcohol or hand sanitizer
10. Seek early consultations if symptoms of cough or colds

11. Maintain a healthy lifestyle to boost immunity.
