REPAIR AND REHABILITATION OF

STRUCTURES
UNIT III
SPECIAL CONCRETES

PREPARED BY
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
DEPT OF CIVIL ENGG
REQUIREMENT OF REPAIR MATERIALS
• Low Shrinkage Properties
• Setting and hardening time
• Optimum workability – without sacrificing desirable properties by the use of
admixtures.
• Alkalinity should be maintained- pH >11.5 - for corrosion protection
• Low permeability
• Colour and texture should match with repair materials
• Cost of material- Economical
• Durable
• Repair material should be environmental friendly
POLYMER CONCRETE
Types of Polymer concrete
1. Polymer Impregnated concrete(PIC)
2. Polymer Cement Concrete (PCC)
3. Polymer Concrete (PC)
4. Partially Impregnated and Surface coated polymer concrete
Polymer Impregnated Concrete(PIC)
• Precast conventional concrete cured and dried in oven.
• Monomer is diffused through open cell and polymerized using radiation (or) application of heat.
Properties
• Cube crushing strength > 100 N/mm2 ,Flexural Strength – 15 N/mm2
• Low porosity and Low Permeability
• Low shrinkage and creeping property
• Resistance to sulphate, chloride and acid attack.
• Resistance to freezing and thawing
Applications
• Prefabricated structures, Prestressed structures
• Marine works
• Desalination plants
• Nuclear power plants,etc.
Polymer Cement Concrete (PCC)
• Made by mixing cement, aggregates , water and monomer.
• Monomers used are polyster styrene, epoxy styrene, etc.
• Incorporation of polymer ranges from 1% and 30% of the solid volume of cement.
Properties
• More workable therefore water content can be reduced.
• Reduction of w/c increases crushing strength.
• Improved bond between the aggregates and matrix.
• Greater resistance to abrasion.
Applications
• Used for factory floors where chemicals or oil may spill.
• Used for surfacing steel bridge or bridge deck.
• Develops good bond with old concrete therefore could be used for repair.
Polymer Concrete
• Mixture of aggregates and polymer binder.
• Polymer binder is used instead of cement in conventional concrete.
• Monomer is diffused through the aggregates and polymerization is done by
radiation or chemical means.
• Silanes are used to increase the bond strength between polymers and
aggregates.
Properties
• Hydrophobic and resists chemical attack.
• Tends to brittle
Application
• Surface patching
• Manufacture of wall panels and pipes
Partially Impregnated and Surface coated concrete
• Partial impregnation is used where resistance to chemical attack is
required.
