WHO IS
GEROLAMO
CARDANO?
INTRODUCE GEROLAMO CARDANO

Gerolamo Cardano is an Italian

Polymath. He was one of the most
influential mathematicians of the
Renaissance, and was one of the key
figures in the foundation of probability.
He was born on September 24, 1501 at
Pavia, Italy. He have 2 children, Aldo
Battista, Giovanni Battista.
Why was he important?

Gerolamo Cardano invented the

complex number unintentionally. His
attempts to find solutions to cubic
equations turned out to created one of
the most powerful mathematical, critical,
the mighty and unimaginary methods; by
combining REAL number with a
IMAGINARY part, creating COMPLEX
Uses of Complex Number

1. Complex Number can be used to describe the

motion of the object
2. A complex number are used in electric circuits,
and helps in transmitting radio waves.
3. Two-dimensional problems involving Laplace's
equation (e.g. heat flow, fluid flow,
electrostatics) are often solved using complex
analysis.
4. Complex numbers can be used to solve
quadratics for zeroes.
How is it used now?
● Engineers use complex numbers to study stresses on
beams and resonance.
● i and complex numbers used to study the flow of fluid
around objects.

● Used in electric circuits, and help in transmitting radio

waves.

● Complex numbers are the basis for quaternions which are

used to program 3D video games.
FUN FACT
The number that most people like the most is 7. A
recent study was taken by making 3000 people
choose their favourite number. 10 percent of the
group chose 7 as their favorite number. This might
be because it has so many connections. (Eg: seven
wonders of the world, pillars of wisdom, seven seas,
seven dwarves, seven days, seven colors in the
rainbow)
History Of Complex Number

1. Complex Number was invented around the

16th century
2. The mathematicians Wessel, Argand, and
Gauss separately devised a graphical
method of representing complex numbers.
3. Cardano was the first to introduce complex
numbers a + √ −b into algebra but had
misgivings about it.
Brief History Of Complex Number
• 1572 - Rafael Bombelli (Italy) set down the rules for multiplication of
complex numbers.

• 1637 - Rene Descartes (French) came up with the standard form for
complex numbers, which is a+bi.

• 1777 - Leonhard Euler (Swiss) made the symbol “i” which stands for √-1,
which made it a little easier to understand.

• 1831 - Carl Friedrich Gauss (German) introduced Argand’s idea to many

people, and called “a+bi” a complex number.

• 1833 - Euler said that "i" can simply be interpreted as one of these pairs
of numbers. This is the point that the modern formulation of complex
numbers actually began.
