BENZIMIDAZOLE DERIVATIVES

INTRODUCTION TO BENZIMIDAZOLE
The properties of benzimidazole and its derivatives have been
studied over more than one hundred years. However, a special
interest of researchers toward this class of compounds was
stimulated by the fact that 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole is a
component of vitamin B12.
the growth of bacteria, the benzimidazole fragment and some
of its derivatives suppress the bacterial growth.
Benzimidazole derivatives find application as promising drugs
in different therapeutic categories as anthelmintics, anti
thrombotics, anti psychotics, analgesics, anti hypertensives,
fungicides, anti fungals, anti histamines, anti emetics, anti
hyperthyroidals, anti ulcerative, antibiotics, anti cancer
agents, MCP-I antagonists, hypoglycemic agents, adrenergic
agonists, anti inflammatory agents, anti tumor compounds,
anti virals, anti microbials, anti HIV agents, anti allergics and
anti phytovirucides.
FUNGI
Currently benzimidazoles are the most
important group of systemic fungicides
in use for controlling the fungal
diseases.(46) Benzimidazole itself and
2- methyl benzimidazole have good
effect on Candida albicans and
Aspergillus fumigatus.(47) Two
important fungicidal benzimidazole
derivatives are Thiabendazole and
Carbendazim.
BACTERIA
Evaluation
1. Antibacterial activity
2. Antifungal activity
3. Anti-tubercular activity
