Battery-Based

Wind Turbine
PREPARED BY: JOHN REEN MERETE
How is Wind Power Distributed?
Electricity generated form a wind farm will travel to a transmission substation, where
it is stepped up to a high voltage in the region of 150-800 kV. It is then distributed
along the electricity grid power lines to the consumer.

Wind is a form of solar energy, the result of uneven heating of earth’s atmosphere by
the sun and it is a relatively variable power source.

The amount of the power generated varies greatly at hourly, daily or seasonal
timescales which means that often the supply of electricity will outweigh the
demand. In a regular wind farm configuration, the power distributed straight onto the
electrical power grid. With no energy storage capability, this requires the turbine to
be slowed to sub-optimal speeds when more energy is produced than is required.
How can Wind Energy be
stored?
Through several different storage processes, excess energy
can be stored to be used during periods of lower wind or
higher demand.
Battery Storage
Electrical batteries are commonly used in solar energy
applications and can be used to store wind generated power.
Lead acid batteries are a suitable choice as they are well
suited to trickle charging and have a high electrical output
charging efficiency.
Wind Turbine Batteries
Why Battery-Based?
In some cases, batteries are being hooked up to wind power
systems for the purpose of storing surplus solar, wind, or
other clean power, which can then release that power later,
although their share of the total power storage remains
quite small (some predict that batteries could store about 4
percent of the world’s total power output in the next 20
years).
Advantages
(Based on GE.Co Applications)
Ramp Control – Grids may not always be able to absorb additional
wind power created by the quick wind speed increase. The battery-
based system lets the turbine catch extra wind energy and then store
it in the battery so that costumers can access revenue

Predictable power – It is critical that power producers provide the

grid with consistent power but changes in the wind can sometimes
hinder successful grid integration.
Frequency Regulation – Lets wind farms store energy in the
battery in order to immediately change and precisely
respond to changes in load, enhancing turbine flexibility.
