Heart block

It is condition in which electrical signals

which cause heart to contract are partially
or totally blocked.
Types of heart block

 1.Sino-atrial block
 2.Atrio-ventricular block
Sino-atrial block

 When electrical signals are generated but

atria does not conduct the electrical
signals.
Atrio-ventricular block

 1st degree heart block

 2nd degree heart block
 3rd degree heart block
1st degree heart block

 Electrical impulses are slowed downed as

they pass through the electrical pathway
but they successfully reached the
ventricals.
2nd degree heart block

 In secondary heart block electrical

impulses are intermitantly reached the
ventricals.
3rd degree heart block

 In third degree heart block electrical

impulses are completely blocked.
Etiology

 Congenital heart diseases

 Drugs (beta blockers,calcium channel
blockers)
Clinical findings

 Dizziness
 Fatigue
 Shortness of breath
 Chest pain
 Loss of consciousness
 Cardiac failure
Diagnosis

 Electrocardiogram
 Holter monitor
Treatment

 No specific treatment
 Heart block can be treated by inserting an
artificial pacemaker.
 It is artificial device which produce
electrical impulses to trigger heart beats.
