SPELLING BEE

RULES
■ 1. The Spelling Bee will be conducted in rounds.
■ 2. The pronouncer announces the word to be spelled. He
speaks slowly and clearly without distorting the normal
pronunciation of the word.
■ 3. The speller has the chance to ask for a sentence,
meaning, or repetition of word .
■ 4. The speller must pronounce the word before and after its
spelling.
■ 5. The pronouncer determines whether or not the word was
spelled correctly.
■ 6. If the correct spelling was given, the speller remains in the contest.

■ 7. Once the speller starts spelling a word, he or she may not go back
and correct it.
■ 8. If the spelling was incorrect, that speller is eliminated from the
contest. The pronouncer gives the correct spelling of that word. The
pronouncer reads a new word to the next student.
■ 9. The judge can disqualify a speller for failing to pronounce any letter
correctly. The speller must separate an open compound word by saying
“space.”
■ 10. The speller must specify when the word is capitalized, hyphenated,
or includes an apostrophe.
■ 11. When the contestants are reduced to two, the
elimination procedure changes. At that point, when one
contestant misspells a word, the other contestant shall
be given an opportunity to spell that same word. If the
second contestant spells the word correctly, then she/he
shall be declared the winner.
■ 12. Spellers’ scores will be plotted on a chart.
■ 13. The pronouncer will have an additional list of words
that students have not studied in case he or she runs
out of words.
