The Structure of an Academic
Journal Article
• 20-25 halaman A4
• 1,5 spasi
• 4000-7000 kata yang terdiri dari:
a. Judul: 8-15 Kata
b. Abstract: 200-250 kata
c. Keywords: 6-8 kata
d. Introduction: 500-1000 kata
e. Literature review (conceptual development or
conceptual framework): 1000-2000 kata
f. Methodology: 500-1000 kata
g. Result: 1000-1500 kata
h. Discussion (summary of findings, implications,
limitations, recommendations for futher
research) : 1000-1500 kata
Article Title
• Should attract the reader’s attention
• Title should clearly reflect the main theme,
issue or position discussed in the article
• As specific as possible given the restrictions on
length
A Title should preferably answer the questions:
• What will be researched?
• How will the topic be researched?
• With whom? – Describe the research
population and units of measurement
• Where/in what context will the study be
conducted?
• Gobler (2003) suggests the following basic structure
for a title:
Main theme or research topic: Research Design +
Population + geographical area

Ex. Value profiles and susceptibility to interpersonal

influence: A Survey of student smokers in Indonesia
Abstract
• Short summary of an article
• Window display or advertisement for your
work and provides an opportunity to impress
the reader.
• Consist of :
a. Element 1: A brief theme sentence to
orientate the overall issue addressed
b. Element 2: Indicate the main aim or purpose
of the study
c. Element 3: Academic and/or practical importance of
the study should be explained
d. Element 4: Methodology used should be described
e. Element 5: The main findings should be summarised
f. Element 6: A statement of conclusions should indicate
the contribution made by the study in filling gaps in the
literature
g. Element 7: Practical or managerial implications of the
study findings should be highlighted where appropriate
Bagaimana memulainya?
Mulai dengan beberapa kalimat:
• Aim (This paper explores ….)
• Main argument (In this paper, we argue
that ……)
• Method (This study was conducted …)
• What’s new (This paper contributes to the
debates on ….)
Keyword
• A maximum of 6-8 keywords should be
included after the abstract
• Reflect discipline, sub-discipline, theme,
research design and context
• Draw attention of potential readers and used
to locate articles in an electronic database
Writing an Introduction
• Element 1: The writer has to state the broad
theme or topic of the study
• Element 2: Provide a convincing answer to the
question: Why is this article important
• Element 3: Summarises the available literature
and cites the most important previous studies
• Element 4. Indicate the most important gaps
in the literature that the current study will
address
• Element 5 : state research problem,
objectives, context and units of analysis
• Element 6: Provide with an outline of the
structure of the rest of the article
Comments from Editor
• The authors should revise the manuscript so the introduction
sets the stage for the reader.
• In the introduction, the authors must provide the reader with
a statement of the problem, explain the significance of the
problem, and explain how the manuscript provides insight
into how the problem might be resolved.
• this section should be brief, taking the reader directly to the
research questions, which are not explicitly specified
anywhere in the manuscript.
Literature Review
• reviews the existing literature
• shows what gap this paper fills. If you do this,
your paper stands a much greater chance of
being accepted.
• outline the competing theories
• show the gap in the research that you fill or
how your paper advances theories of specific
issue
Comment from editor
• The authors should revise the manuscript by including a
section that reviews the literature related to community
preparedness and community knowledge of soil landslide
events.
• The literature review should also provide the reader with
insights into what is known about the problem they seek to
address, theoretically or practically.
• The literature review should also provide the reader with
insights into the limitations of our knowledge. The inclusion of
these limitations in the literature review section will help the
authors to justify why their research needs to be undertaken.
• Equally important, the literature review helps
the reader to understand the logic behind the
research questions. When selecting literature,
the authors must make sure it is current and
relevant to the problem under consideration..
Apa yang tidak diharapkan dari editor?

• Informasi yang sudah diketahui oleh editor

• Literatur review yang panjang

Apa yang diharapkan?

• Literatur review yang padat dan singkat
• Kesimpulan yang didukung oleh temuan yang
baik
• Kontribusi kebaruan pada ilmu pengetahuan
Methodology
• Describes the steps followed in the execution
of the study
• Provides a brief justification for the research
methods used
• Should contain enough detail to enable the
reader to evaluate the appropriatness of your
methods and the reliability and validity of your
findings
Comments from Editor
• The authors should revise their manuscript by updating the method
section.
• In doing so, the authors must specify the methods they used to identify,
collect, and analyze their data.
• A reader would be left wondering what such a design might include. Did
the authors use a survey? If so, what was the nature and focus of the
survey instrument? How was the survey implemented in the field? How
were the respondents selected, meaning what was the population from
which the sample was drawn? How did the authors control for bias?
• Similarly, what exactly did the authors use as primary and secondary
data? Both forms of data need to be better specified and explained. Was
the primary data about community knowledge extracted from interviews
or other documents?
Results VS Discussion
• Result
1. Summarises the data collected for a study
2. Describe the findings (table, graph)

• Discussion
1. Meaning of data
2. Implication of data
Comments from Editor
• Analytical Findings (Results):

The authors should revise their manuscript so that the

content of the findings (results) section is limited to just that:
the reporting of the results.
• The hypothesis statement (and discussion) should be included
in a preceding section of the manuscript, for example, at the
end of the literature review section or at the beginning of the
methods section.
Comments from editor: Discussion
• The authors should revise their manuscript so that the
discussion section explains how the empirical findings
contribute to the broader literature.
• Moreover, the focus of the discussion section should be on
how the findings presented in the manuscript contribute to
the broader literature.
• To this end, the authors could discuss how the findings
address a gap in the literature, extend our current knowledge,
or provide new insights into a specific phenomenon or
problem?
• the authors need to consider how they can expand their
discussion for each of their primary findings, drawing linkages
between each individual finding and the broader literature.
Conclusion
• Provide recommendation
• State further research needed
Editor’s Comments
• The authors might think about three things as they revise
their conclusion.
• First, it would be useful if they could identify some of the
practical implications of their findings, meaning what can be
done to improve community preparedness in the
communities that are the focus of this manuscript. The
authors must go beyond general statements.
• In doing so, the authors must be specific about the policy
actions that could be undertaken.
• Second, the authors could identify the limitations of their
research, which may including sample size issues or response
bias.
• This would be useful for a reader who wants to know
whether the results are generalizable to a different
community.
• Finally, the authors can provide insights into the types of
research activities that may come next, with an eye on
advancing or extending the findings presented in the present
manuscript.
Time to reassess:
Ask yourself:
• Do I have enough literature?
• Am I making ‘knowledge claim’ or “just
reporting”
• Is this “an argument” of “manifesto”?
• Is my data sufficient to the claims I am
making?
• Am I being sufficiently speculative?
Response dari Reviewer
• Ditolak? Jangan sakit hati
“We understand that this decision is likely disappointing to you and we are
sorry for that. It is particularly difficult for us, given the volume of interest in
our journal. Again, we believe it is fairer to everyone involved to not continue
with a paper that likely will not meet our standards after major revisions. This
does not mean your work is without merit or potential, and we hope you find
a suitable fit in the near future”.

• Revisi = kerja keras

• 1 kali diterima, addictive effect
Key factors (besides ensuring fit with the scope relevant
journal) when submitting to a more suitable journal in
the future:
1. The rationale for conducting this research is not clear from
the abstract and introduction.
2. What is the academic challenge addressed in this paper?
3. What is new in this paper?
4. What is the academic challenge you are trying to address?
5. How is the paper? Is The paper too descriptive? Does it
clearly state the conceptual as well as empirical findings?.
6. How about the conclusion? Is The conclusions weak? Does it
clearly state the implications to theory and practice,
limitations of this research and any future research
recommendations?
