Of
Wearing High Heel
T.P. Balachandar
INTRODUCTION
• High heels are now usually worn by the girls & women's,
generally designers call a footwear as high heels if the heel
ranges from 2-6 inches
• According to the fashion industry, the heel of the footwear less
than 2.5 inches called as low heels, from 2.5-3.5 inches called as
mid heels, above 3.5 inches called as high heels
• In olden days men's also wear high heels ex. cow boy boots &
Cuban heels
• Women wear high heels to increase the stature, to be attractive,
to be sexy and to be formal.
• A survey conducted by American podiatric Medical Association
concluded that 72% of women wear high heels, out of them 39%
wear regularly.
• Among the high heel wearers 49% women below 25 age and 23%
of above 25-65 age group.

Pro’s
• Confidence Boost - High heels can boost your confidence and give you a more
authoritative look.

• Enhanced Curves - High heels also enhance your physical appearance. They
accentuate your curves by the way they change your posture, and they create a
seductive, hip-swaying strut that men find attractive.

• Toned Muscles - Wearing high heels may even help tone your muscles! The calf
muscles in your legs contract and adjust to the angle of the heel, making them
appear toned and tight.

• Add Height - Perhaps the most obvious reason to wear high heels is to add
height. Whether you are short in build or just want to appear a little taller, there
is no better way than by slipping on a pair of high heeled shoes.

• Improve Posture - When you wear heels, you are forced to pay more attention
to your posture. They make you stand up straighter, and the heels shift
your weight forward to your toes, making it harder to slouch while standing.
Practicing great posture - keeping your shoulders back and your stomach sucked 4
inward - will also help you look good while walking in heels.
• Look Long and Lean - High heels add inches to your
height and elongate the line of the legs, making them
appear longer and thinner. If you wear leggings or pants
that are the same color as your shoes, you can enhance
this effect.

• Make a Fashion Statement - Ultimately, heels are a

great fashion accessory. They have the ability to add polish
and feminine charm to any look. Whether you wear jeans
and a t-shirt or a pencil skirt and blouse, heels can make
an outfit

PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES IN MUSCLES & TENDONS

Calf muscles
• May shorten and tighten over time
• Collapsing of the arches
• Difficulty of relaxing the foot completely
Achilles tendon
• May shorten and tighten over time
• Inability for the foot to rest at a 90-degree
angle
• Limited foot mobility

16
PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES

Knee joint
• Extra strain on the knee complex tendons
• Balancing on a high heel increases the
pressure on the inside of the knee
• Quads work harder and increase pressure
on the kneecap
• Possibility of osteoarthritis over time

17
ANKLE
• Sprain may result from twisting of the
ligaments in the ankle between the foot
and the lower leg
• Balancing on the heel creates instability
• Increased chance of falling, especially if
older or obese
• Sudden shift in balance can twist the ankle
and sprain ligaments
• Haglund’s deformity (“pump bump”) – a
bony enlargement from irritation to the
heel from rigid backs or straps of heels

18
TOES
• Pressure pushes down and forward on the ball of the foot
• High heels have narrow and tight toe boxes, which force toes to
conform to the shape of the shoe without enough room to relax
• Loss of strength in intrinsic muscles of the foot
• Create minor conditions, such as bunions, corns,
and hammertoes

• Bunions: a large bony bump at the base of the

big tow, which resulted in the joint being forced
to permanently misalign and rub against the
shoe
• Corns: hard calluses that form on the top of the
toes or on the side of the small toe
• Hammertoes: a permanent curl at the middle
joint of the middle toes that resulted from
shortened and tightened ligaments and tendons;
pressure on the ball of the foot will cause pain
19
CONCLUSION

• Studies by Dr.Graham Rilen of University of East Anglia revealed wearing

high heel shoes in long term lead to changes in foot shape, pressure that
arise can make the feet flat basin
• The use of high heel stimulate the body to produce proteins that can weaken
the tendons around the feet, this condition makes the soles of the feet in to a
flat basin that often trigger pain and difficulty walking
• Approximately 3.5% of Britons who are accustomed to wearing high heels
have flat feet
• Besides flat feet, excessive use of high heels are also susceptible to trigger
tension hips, knees, thighs and increase the risk of osteoarthitis and back
pain
• Heels can lead to bunions, heel pain, toe deformities, shortened Achilles
tendons, and trapped nerves. In fact, women account for about 90% of the
nearly 800,000 operations each year for bunions, hammertoes (a permanent
deformity of the toe joint in which the toe bends up slightly and then curls
downward, resting on its tip), and trapped nerves, and most of these
surgeries can be linked back to their high-heeled shoe choice
• High heels can also cause lower back strain, because the heel causes your
body to pitch forward more than normal, putting excess pressure on the 20

back".
