MAKING SAFE

DRIVING
DECISIONS
DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM
What is a driving decision?
Examples are: checking mirrors, checking
gauges, slowing, speeding up, signaling,
executing a lane change, keeping the proper
following distance, and proper lane positioning
before a turn.
• These decisions become second nature as a
person has more driving experience.
Making Decisions
 -Long Term
How to navigate from NewYork to Los Angeles?

-Short Term
Can I change my lane to the lane right of me?
Can I pass this intersection and join the left road?

-Immediate
Example : Turning left at an
intersection
-This was a simple maneuver, yet it takes 3-4
levels of decisions and control to execute

Consider how many rules would it take to drive:

• Safely
• Efficiently
• Following all listed traffic rules
• Only follow those rules everyone else is following
Summary of
the decision
making process
Driving Decisions can be made
either through conscious
deliberation, for example,
deciding if a parking space is
large enough for the car, or
through an unconscious
process using previously
learned behavioural patterns;
for instance, automatically
using the indicator when
leaving a roundabout .
