Pattern

• Patterns can have multiple meanings and elements in design.

Repetition focuses on the same object being repeated; patterns are
made up from different components which are then repeated in the
same way throughout the design. A seamless pattern is one that flows
throughout without flaw in the beginning or end: the entire pattern is
a single, coherent unit. This approach to design becomes especially
important when thinking about designs which incorporate significant
amounts of color, texture or depth.
• Using a pattern can be complex. As with the photography example
above, however, patterns can be used to put the user at ease and to
allow them navigation tools throughout the design. In architecture,
patterns in the forms of motifs have been used to improve the
aesthetic quality of the structure, to stamp design authority, and to
provide necessary user guidance. The use of such patterns can
enhance the user experience, as well as the design and look of the
final product, but must be used wisely so as to avoid a complicated
layout or unattractive design.

PATTERNS IN NATURE
• All around us, we see a great diversity of living things, from the
microscopic to the gigantic, from the simple to the complex, from
bright colors to dull ones. One of the most intriguing things we see in
nature is patterns. We tend to think of patterns as sequences or
designs that are orderly and that repeat. But we can also think
of patterns as anything that is not random.
• For example, we recognize the spots on a giraffe as a pattern, but
they're not regular, nor are any of the spots the same size or shape.
However, other patterns are orderly as is seen in the symmetry of a
sea star or a snowflake.
PROPORTION AND SCALE
• Proportion in art is the relationship of two or more elements in
a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to
size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc.; i.e. ratio.
• When two or more elements are put together in a painting a
relationship is created. This relationship is said to be harmonious
when a correct or desirable association exists between the elements.
This refers to the correct sizing and distribution of an element which
then creates good proportion. Good proportion adds harmony and
symmetry or balance among the parts of a design as a whole.
• When the principle of proportion is applied to a work of art it is
usually in the relationship of size. That is, the size of one element as
compared to the size of another related element within the same
composition. In this instance, a comparison of size is made between
the:
• Height, width and depth of one element to that of another
• Size of one area to the size of another area
• Size of one element to the size of another element
• Amount of space between two or more elements
Proportion in architecture
• Proportion is a central principle of architectural theory and an
important connection between mathematics and art. It is the visual
effect of the relationships of the various objects and spaces that make
up a structure to one another and to the whole.
