BHOOMIKA.D.R. 2nd MSc 3rd Semester Industrial Chemistry REG NO : PS184203 CONTENTS 1) Introduction. 2) Pollution. 3) Types of pollution. 4) Water pollution. 5) Water act, 1974. 6) Conclusion 7) References INTRODUCTION To establish environmental education and create environmental awareness among the public. To introduce principles and effective plans regarding environmental issues. To establish laws for environment protection and implement them on behalf of the government. POLLUTION Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Types of water pollution 1.Water pollution 2.Air pollution 3.Soil pollution 4.Noise pollution Water pollution Water pollution means such contaminants of water or such alteration of the physical , chemical or biological properties of water . Sources of water pollution •Domestic waste •Industrial effluents •Insecticides and pesticides •Detergents and fertilizers Effects of water pollution 1.Diseases :
• Typhoid , Cholera , Hepatitis and various other
diseases. 2.Destruction of ecosystems : •Water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked. 3.Eutropication : •Chemicals in a water body , encourage the growth of algae. •These algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake . and this decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body , so it affects the water body. 4.Effects the food chain : • Fish , Shellfish etc, which are then consumed by humans. Prevention of water pollution 1.Save water •Conserving water is our first aim. •Water wastage is a major problem globally and we are only now making up to the issue. •Simply small changes you can make domestically will make a huge difference. 2.Better treatment of sewage : •Agricultural or other industries can reuse this wastewater by reducing its toxic contents. 3.Use environmentally friendly products : •By using soluble products that do not go on to become pollutants , we can reduce the amount of water pollution caused by a household. Environmental legislations in India •Central enactments 1.Air pollution 2.Water pollution 3.Pesticides 4.Radiation 5.Forests , Fisheries and others 6.Comprehensive environment protection •State enactments 1.Smoke control 2.Water pollution 3.Land use 4.Pest control WATER ACT,1974 It provides for maintaining and restoring the wholesomeness of water by preventing and controlling of water pollution. FEATURES •To prevent and control of water pollution. •Maintain and restore of all types of surface and ground water. •Establishment of CPCB and SPCB . •This gives powers and functions to these boards. •It provide funds , budgets ,accounts. •It provides penalties for the defaulters. CPCB •To prevent and control of water pollution. •It coordinates the activities of SPCB •It provides technical assistance and guidance. •It organizes training programs to prevent and control of water pollution. •It organizes comprehensive programs on pollution related issues. •Collects complies and publishes technical and statistical data related to water pollution. •It prepare manuals for the treatment and disposal of waste water and sewage. •Lays down standards for water quality parameters. •Plans nation –wide programs for prevention and control of water pollution. •Establishes and recognizes the laboratories for the analysis of water. SPCB •The board advises the State government with respect to the location of any industry that might pollute a stream or a well. •It lays down standard for effluent . •It has power to take legal samples of trade effluents in accordance with the procedure laid down in the Act. •The sample is taken in the presence of the occupier or his agent is divided into two parts. Sealed, signed by both parties and send for analysis to some recognized lab. If the samples do not confirm to the prescribed water qualities standard ,then consent is refused to the unit. •Every industries is obtained has to consent from the board. •The board suggests efficient methods for utilization, treatment and disposal of trade effluents. APPELLATE •It consisting of a single person or three persons are appointed by the head of the state. The Governer is constituted to here such appeals as filed by some industries due to some order made by the state board within 30 days of passing the orders. •The appellate authority after giving the appellant and the state board an opportunity of being heard disposes of the appeal as expeditiously as possible. CONCLUSION •Environmental pollutions are affecting not only individual , it affects entire countries all over the world. •It is necessary to create awareness towards improving the quality of environment. •All this acts helps to control and prevent pollution.
