BIOMEDICAL
WASTE
 Biomedical Waste, (BMW) means any waste
which is generated during the diagnosis or
treatment of human beings , animals or in
research activities
 It consists of solids, liquids, and laboratory
waste that are potentially infectious or
dangerous.
 theillegal, large-scale dumping and burning of
biomedical waste at Pondicherry’s truck
terminal and Shows that waste that evidently
comes from the Puducherry Government’s
Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of
Dental Sciences (MGPGI).
PROBLEMS
 Fermentation of organic portion to attract fly breeding
 Increased risk of infections to medical, nursing and
other hospital staff
 Injuries from broken pieces of containers and needles
to health workers and waste handlers
 Poor infection control leading to nosocomial infections
in patients particularly HIV, hepatitis B and C
 Development of resistant strains of microorganisms.
Guidelines

 Segregation and Packing


Biomedical waste shall be segregated into
containers bags at the point of generation .
 Storage

Immediate treatment and disposal are ideal


procedures to be followed for disposal of
biomedical waste. Untreated biomedical waste,
however, can be stored for not more than 48 hrs.
Treatment and Disposal
Autoclave shall be used for disinfecting and
treating biomedical waste. The combustible
fraction of the waste may be incinerated. Deep
burial is the ultimate method of disposal.
 Bio medical waste must not be mixed with any
other waste, segregate in separate
containers.
 Bio medical waste that are to be transported
must b securely packed ,transportation of BM
waste must be allowed only in vehicles
authorized by prescribed authority.
