What is Four Loko?

A drink made up of
-Alcohol
-Caffeine
-Taurine
-Guarana
What is Four Loko?

Also Containing
-Carbonated Water
-Sugar
-Aritificial and Natural
Flavoring
The Problem?

The product is targeted to (and not exclusive to)

under age college students. Not only are under
age kids drinking now, but they are drinking
without knowing the facts about the four loko
drink specifically.
The Facts...

-Mixing caffeine with - The caffeine acts as a

your alcohol makes you stimulant to prevent the

alcohol. Mackey 1
-”The caffeine masks the
effects of alcohol, -It has the reputation of
creating a feeling of being called “blackout

drunk.”melnick2
Possible Solutions...

- States can ban the alcoholic beverage all together

with the Liquor Control Board's help.

OR

- Universities can ban the drink from the campuses and

it's students.
Will those solutions work?

-Will banning the drink Nation-wide

- keep college
students from abusing the product?
Most likely it will, the chances of the everyday college
student being able to get there hands on the beverage
would decrease, but it wouldn't disappear. For
instance look at marijuana, it's illegal but college
students are exposed to it weekly.
Will those solutions work?

- If Universities ban the drink, will that prevent

students from getting it?
Probably not, it actually has the potential to drive
students to try and get the “rare” drink because it's
meant to have crazy side affects.
What will work?

-My solution proposes that we try and educate our

students as well as other college students on the
dangers of the product itself. My theory is, if
students knew the affects it has in it's fullest extent,
they would be less likely to abuse the product
ignorantly.
What will work?

A lobbyist for Four Loko, Jim Halstrom said...

"But we also believe curbing alcohol abuse or underage

drinking will not be accomplished by singling out a lone
product or beverage category. We think the true answer
lies with increased education and awareness by all and
with respect for the law."
Proving the Solution

Q: Is it possible to ban - Why do people stay away

everything that has from junk food?
potential to put us in -Their educated on the
danger. negative affects it has on
A: Probably not, we would the body
have to ban everything -This doesn't mean all
from doughnuts to people will avoid it, it
bicycles. just means the numbers
decrease through
education of each
individual.
What's the point?

- Four Loko beverage does live up to it's name

“blackout in a can” when used incorrectly or
abusively.
-Our job as well as college campus's job, is to educate
our students with the information and statistics of
Four Loko.
-Through education, we can prevent the number of
medical emergencies or difficulties in college
students.
