SENTENCES

According to Purpose and Structure


Sentence

A set of words that is complete in itself,


typically containing a subject and predicate,
conveying a statement, question,
exclamation, or command,
and consisting of a main clause
and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
PURPOSE STRUCTURE

1.DECLARATIVE A. SIMPLE
2.IMPERATIVE B. COMPOUND
3.EXCLAMATORY C. COMPLEX
4.INTEROGATIVE D. COMPLEX-COMPOUND
1. DECLARATIVE SENTENCE

A sentence that states a FACT


Simple statements – STATE, ASSERT, or DECLARE.
Ends with a period
Example:
The Philippines is under a state of
emergency.
2. IMPERATIVE SENTENCE

A command, request or extends a wish


Ends with a period

Example:
Command - Stay at home.
Request - Please practice social distancing.
Wish - Eat well and get enough sleep.
3. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE

Express sudden and strong feelings - pity, surprise,


wonder, sympathy, happiness or gratitude.
Ends with an exclamation point.

Example:
I am going crazy!
Happy Birthday!
4. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE

 A question
 Ends with a question mark

 Example:
When will this pandemic end?
Whether or not the ECQ is a valid exercise of police power?
A. SIMPLE SENTENCE

 Consists of only 1 independent clause


 Containing a subject and a verb
 Expresses a complete thought
 There is no dependent clause
 Independent clause (Main Clause) - is a simple sentence

 Example: People are suffering.


B. COMPOUND

 Consists of at least 2 independent clauses joined by


coordinating conjuctions.
 No dependent clause in compound sentence
 Can also be joined by a semicolon (;)

 Example: Juan was convicted but Pedro was acquitted.


The Prosecutor asked him a question; he invoked his right to self-
incrimination
C. COMPLEX SENTENCE

Consists of 1 independent clause and at least 1


dependent clause

Example: The general rule is that breach of promise


is not actionable, except when it was done to
defraud the other party or when there has been
substantial investment.
D. COMPLEX-COMPOUND

Consists of at least 2 independent and one or more


dependent clauses.

Example: Juan was ready to fulfill his obligation


while Pedro was in delay making him liable for
damages.
