Case Analysis

Six-step Case Analysis Process

• Consider the relevant Information
• Define the case problem and write a problem statement
• Analyse the facts and underlying assumptions
• List possible alternative solutions
• Select a solution and prepare to defend it
• Decide how to carry out the solution
- Penrose, Rasberry and Myers, 2016
Relevant information
• Basic details of the case
• Basically facts and part of inferences
• No assumptions and No opinions

• Who, what, when, where and how

Problem statement
• Problems are barriers that threaten to block an organization or a
person from achieving important goals.

• A good problem statement should be descriptive, zeroing in on the

key issue that must be addressed.
• Don’t confuse symptoms with causes.

• Avoid suggesting a solution at this stage.

Analysing facts and assumptions
• Consider underlying assumptions in the case.
• Can you support the assumptions with information and facts found in the
case?

• Discuss stakeholders assumptions.

• What are the constraints that are being faced? At the very minimum a
solution must be affordable, legal and ethical.
Alternative Solutions
• Mutually exclusive

• Criterion that must be met in order to accomplish each solution.

• Also, consider the pros and cons of each alternative solution

Recommendation
• The recommendation of your solution should always address the
problems identified by you.

• Build an argument while recommending a course of action.

Action plan
• Specific step-by-step description

• Answering
• How will it be done?
• Who will be doing it?
• Considering minute details
