07- CARAVAN MIGRATION

FROM HONDURAS TO THE U.S
By: Jimena Somoano
The caravan migration from
Honduras was an international migration. Most
immigrants on this caravans were families with
children. The principal factors for this
migration were the extremely high crime rates,
civil unrest, poor infrastructure, large presence
of drugs, and a poor economy/ lack of work.
The migrants were planning to go as a caravan
(which is defined as any large group of people,
typically with vehicles or animals, traveling
together in single file) to the U.S-Mexico
border. The pull factors for this migration were
the opportunities for better jobs, better schools
and hospitals for their children, a safer
environment, and a better quality of life.
EFFECTS:
• Political:
-U.S President Trump threatened to close the U.S-Mexico border and to put
tariffs/taxes of cars made in Mexico if Honduras doesn’t stop Central
American migrants from coming.
-Trump ordered the suspension of financial aid to Honduras, El Salvador and
Guatemala, where all the migrants come from.
-U.S border facilities have received an ever increasing influx of migrants
coming in, with 53, parents and children at the border in March.
• Social:
-increased amount of caravans coming to the United States, due to violence and
civil uprising in Honduras.
-increased amount of sexual assault and violence cases due to larger groups
traveling together. (60% of women are raped on their way to their destinations in
these caravans, according to The Conversation)
-social media coverage and news outlets have shed light on the Honduran
government.
-the caravan has caused criticism from people in Mexico and the United States,
with 7 in 10 Mexicans see the caravan negatively, according to a survey by the
Mexican newspaper “El Universal”.
-More than 4,000 people were found sick or injured, such as fevers, respiratory
illnesses, conjunctivitis, and other ailments.

• Economic:
-Locals in Mexico were donating money to feed and support these migrants,
causing a financial burden to these people.
-The arrival of large groups of immigrants make jobs more scarce and the
economy less stable.
