THE RUSSIAN TAIGA
Russia:
• Is home to more than one-fifth
of the world’s forest areas
(approximately 763.5 million
hectares).
• It’s boreal forests represent the
largest forested region on
Earth. These forests have
relatively few tree species,
however, they contain more
than 55%of the world’s
conifers, and 11% of the
world’s biomass.

DEFORESTATION AT ALL COAST
WHY?
- World demands of:
• Timber
• Paper
• Wood products

Areas nearer to China are

most affected, as it is the
main market for the timber.
The illegal cutting down of
trees is increasingly
threatening Russian
forests.
NO TREES IN VLADIVOSTOK
One example of a forest in the way of extinction is the forest of Dalnerechensk.
The forest seems to be endless, however, the massive cut of trees make people
believe that will probably disappear in around 5 years if the illegal felling of trees
isn’t stopped.
WHAT IS STARTING TO HAPPEN?
• The exhaustion of timber supplies
for the region’s legal forest
industry
• The undermining of traditional
forest resource use by local people
• The degradation of unique forest
ecosystems
• The decrease of Amur tiger habitat
and food resources of its prey
• The acceleration of Global
Warming
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?
• The massive logging of trees
may provide a drier atmosphere
because of the less rate of
transpiration and rainfall, so
some parts of the Russian Taiga
may turn into the Russian desert
• Complete extinction of Amur
Tiger
• If the amount of plants is small,
the levels of oxygen in the air
will be reduced
• Global temperature will rise
ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Deforestation means
less trees, less trees,
means more CO2,
more CO2, is the
cause of Enhanced
Greenhouse Effect,
so, Global Warming.
WHAT IS TO BE DONE?
Some solutions were proposed in order to try to
avoid this problem:
• Completely stop deforestation in the
Russian Taiga by making the felling of trees
illegal
• Stop exports from the Russian Taiga
• International Response
THE WAR OF SOLUTIONS
Completely stop deforestation in the Russian Taiga by making the felling of
trees illegal:
Benefits:
• The largest intact strip of boreal forest would be preserved
• Scarce plants and animal species populations would be able to regenerate
• There would be more area to provide for eco tourism and scientific study of
plants and animals
• Approximately 63 million cubic meters of wood would be saved each year.
That is the annual amount of total wood derived from Russian forest for wood
products.
THE WAR OF SOLUTIONS
Stop exports from the Russian Taiga:
China, Japan and South Korea are three main importers of Russian wood and
forest products. With main importers lying south and south west of Russia,
exporters have moved closer to the areas of demand. Stopping exportation could
start solving this problem and provide some benfits:
• Russia would not have to rely on other nations for forest products
• There would be no illegal forestry as a result of foreign investment in forest
products.
• A total of $7,245,697,000 resulting from domestic consumption would remain
inside the economy.
THE WAR OF SOLUTIONS
International Response:
Because China, Japan and South Korea are the main importers of Russian forest
products, cooperation from these governments would reduce the number of
illegally imported logs.
Benefits:
• The Russian government would have more support in negotiating its forests.
• With increased foreign support and foreign aid, more technology would be
developed regarding the environment.
• The forests would be better maintained and preserved.
