INFINITIVE
GERUND
GERUND or the –ING form of the verb is used:
After certain verbs (avoid, can’t stand,
consider, don’t mind, enjoy, hate, like, love, miss,
prefer, spend time, etc.)
I enjoy listening to music.
After prepositions: I am keen on playing in a
band.
As a subject: Smoking is bad for you.
As an object: I like dancing.
INFINITIVE
INFINITIVE is a base form of the verb and is used:
Aftercertain verbs: agree, can’t afford, choose, decide,
want, hope, manage, need, pretend, refuse, would like,
would prefer
He doesn’t want to visit us.
After question words: I want to show you how to do it.
After adjectives: It is nice to know that you are here.
Toshow purpose (why?) He came here [why?]to ask you
some questions.
