WHAT IS SIN ? •I JOHN 3:4 •4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Sin began with the devil. •1 John 3:8. •8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. JESUS AFFIRMS THAT SATAN IS THE INVENTOR OF SIN •JOHN 8:44 • 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. SATAN LED A REBELLION IN HEAVEN • REVELATION 12:7-9 • 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, • 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. • 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him • Ezekiel 28:17. Pride in his beauty and wisdom defiled him. • 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. • Isaiah 14:13, 14. He defied God and determined to overthrow His throne. • 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: • 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 1/3 OF ANGELS WHO FOLLOWED SATAN ALSO SINNED •JUDE 1:6 •6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. FALL OF MAN THE ORIGIN OF SIN ON PLANET EARTH •GENESIS 3 • 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? • 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: • 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. More subtil than any other beast • Subtil – unfavorable tendency • Job 5:12 • 12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. • Job 15:5 • 5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. BETTER WAYS OF BEING PRUDENT THAN BEING CUNNING • PROVERBS 12:16, 23 ; 13:16; 14:8,15,18, 22:3; 27:12 • 16 A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame. • 23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. • 16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly. • 8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit. THIS NOT A NORMAL SERPENT •NORMAL SERPENTS : 1. Serpents from the word serpo which means to creep 2. Have no organs for speech or any articulate sound 3. Serpents only hiss Satan transforms himself into an angel of light; •2 CORINTHIANS 11 :14 •14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. • 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: • 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. • 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Testing of our first mother •1 Timothy 2:14 • 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. •2 Corinthians 11:3 • 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. Satan telling Eve that they shall be like God •This was what satan aspired to be •Isaiah 14:14 •14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. GOD’S WORD IS SURE •GENESIS 2:17 •17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Eve is transgressing divine command • She coveted • Exodus 20:17 • 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. • She stole God’s property- she broke the 8th commandment –Exodus 20:15 • 15 Thou shalt not steal. • She transgressed the 6th commandment ; do not kill- gave Adam knowing well he will die – Exodus 20:13 • 13 Thou shalt not kill. •She then broke the 1st commandment –She placed Satan before God in her esteem and obeyed him rather than her creator. •Exodus 20:3 •3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. LUST BRINGS SIN •JAMES 1:15 •15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. • The devil, speaking through the serpent, deceived our first parents, Adam and Eve, into disobeying God. • This brought the troubles, woe and suffering we see in the world today. • Romans 5:12 • Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. • God did not wish them to be tempted above their ability to withstand • 1 Corinthians 10:13 • 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
•Confusion and shame
were engendered •Innocence was lost •Guilt was contracted VERSES 8-13 • 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. • 9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? • 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. • 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? • 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. • 13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. WAGES OF SIN •ROMANS 6:23 •23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CONSEQUENCES OF SIN WE ALL HAVE TO SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN •ROMANS 3:23 •23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 1. SUFFERING •ROMANS 8:22 •22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. WHY DOES GOD PERMIT SUFFERING? •Job 2:7 •So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. • The story of Job shows that God is not primarily responsible for suffering. Sometimes God allows suffering for the development of character as was true in the case of Job. • Job said, “When He has tested me I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10). • Much suffering is caused by man’s own folly, such as the consequences of war. • Suffering is often caused by disobedience to natural laws. • Sickness comes because of a failure to exercise or eat correct food. • The basic cause of suffering is sin, because suffering was unknown before sin existed. • The devil is the originator of sin, so he is primarily the one to blame – but not God. 2. DEATH •Romans 5:12 • Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. THE DESTRUCTION OF SIN AND THE DEVIL • EZEKIEL 28:18-19 • 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. • 19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. GOD HAS DONE SOMETHING •EZEKIEL 18:32 • 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. •JOHN 3:16 • For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. •NAHUM 1:9 •9 What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. •1 John 4:4 •You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
