Urban Landuse Models :-

– It is developed to understand overall patterns of land use in town.

– Sociologist, economist and geographers have developed serval models explaining
different types of people and business tend to exist within the urban setting.
– Various urban landuse models are :-
1. Grid model
2. Zonal model
3. Sectoral model
4. Multiple nuclei model
5. Irregular pattern model
Grid model :-

• The grid plan is a type of city plan in

which streets run at right angles to each
other, forming grid.
• Ex, Ancient Greece, Maxico city
Zonal Model :-
• This was first to explain distribution of social groups
within urban areas.
• A city grows outwards from a central point in series
of rings.
• The innermost ring represents Central Business
District.
• Second ring consists poor housings and industries.
• Third ring contains working class housings
• Fourth ring have larger houses, usually middle class.
Sectoral model :-
• As per this model city develops in
sectors instead of rings.
• Certain areas of city are more attractive
for various activites. They are
bifurcated accordingly.
Multiple nuclei model :-
• This model was developed by
Geographers Harris and Ullman.
• According to this model contains more
than one centre around which activites
revolves.
• For example universiry road may attract
well educated residents and book stores,
where airports may attract hotels and
warehouses.
Irregular pattern model :-
• It indicates the stage of ‘transition from
village to city.
• This develops due to lack of planning or
construction.
• Ex, Africa, Dharavi in Mumbai.
