THE QURAN AND

THE MODERN
SCIENCE
4. THE LIGHT OF THE MOON
IS REFLECTED LIGHT
“Blessed is He Who
made Constellations in
the skies, And placed
therein a Lamp And a
Moon giving light.”
(25:61)
“SHAMS” is referred to as
◦“Siraj” which means a ‘Torch’ OR
◦as wahhaaj which means a ‘Blazing lamp’
“QAMAR” is described as
◦“Muneer” which is a body that gives Nur i.e. light.

"Did you see how Allah created seven heavens,

one above the other, and made in them the
moon a light and the sun a lamp" (71:15-16)
Scientists and Ancient
Greeks
◦The extra-mission theory: the visual rays coming
out of the eyes "feel" distant objects, or some mixture
of the two.
◦Leonardo da Vinci explained the phenomenon in
the early 16th century when he realized that “Both
Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same
time. Light is reflected from Earth to the Moon and
back to Earth as earthshine.”
5. THE MOTION OF SUN
“It is He (The Creator) who
created the night, the day,
the sun and the moon. Each
one is traveling in an orbit
with its own motion.” (21:33)
The Word
“YASBAHOON(‫سبحون‬
;;‫”) ی‬
◦Implies the idea of motion produced by a moving
body
◦movement of one’s legs running on the ground, or
the action of swimming in water.

◦In the case of a celestial body, one is forced to

translate it, according to its original meaning, as ‘to
travel with its own motion.’
EARLY CONCEPTS
“The earth stands still in the Centre of the
universe and every other body including
the sun moved around it”. (2nd Century B.C)
◦Heliocentric Theory of Planetary Motion by
NICHOLAS COPERNICUS (1512 A.D):
“The sun is motionless at the Centre of
the solar system with the planets
revolving around it”.
◦In 1609, Yohannus
Keppler published the
‘Astronomia Nova’. In
this he concluded that
“Not only do the
planets move in
elliptical orbits around
the sun, they also
rotate upon their axes
at irregular speeds”.
MODERN CONCEPT
 ROTATORY MOTION
• On average, the sun rotates on its axis once every 27 days.
• Rotation speed = 1.997 (Km/sec) = 7189.2 (Km/hr)

 ORBITAL MOTION
• It takes the Solar System about 225–250 million (22.5 CRORE) years to
complete one orbit through the Milky Way (a galactic year).
• Orbital speed of the Solar System about the center of the Milky Way is
approximately 251 km/s (156 mi/s) = 903,600 Km/hr.
