Introduction
• Conflict management means to confine the
negative aspects arising in a conflict and to
extend the positive effects of conflict. Conflict
management aims to increase learning and
group synergy, ultimately resulting in more
effective performance un organizational
setting (Rahim, 2002).The point of refereeing
would be to upgrade learning and class
results, which incorporate viability.
Introduction
• A project team is two or more individuals who have a
mutual purpose and can assume separate responsibilities
individually, depend on each other for fulfillment of
these responsibilities.
• In a project there are people from different backgrounds,
who collaborate with each other, which means that
diversities knowledge form different fields can be added
enhancing the competency of project. Furthermore, it
also invites difference of opinions within the team
members having different perspectives about same tasks
which can possibly result in conflicts.
• Organizations can take these conflicts as an opportunity
for innovation and renewal leading to productivity if this
could be managed and limited to certain boundaries
Problem Statement
• Projects generally are conducted by teams, composed of
specialists in different fields having diversified
backgrounds. In such environment, conflicts are natural to
arise. Conflicts have some positive and negative aspects
the same time.
• A project team can work better if the management can
deal with the conflicts arising among the members
performing different activities, giving the conflicts a
positive direction which is neglected because of lack of
knowledge about using conflict management styles in
different circumstances.
• Temporal coordination is also important for prioritizing the
activities and having them done efficiently and effectively.
Aim of the Study
• The study will evaluate temporal coordination
mechanism as a moderator on the relationship
between team performance and conflict
management behaviors. Subsequently, while
there are absolutely numerous potential
fascinating elements to learn about undertaking
groups, we will concentrate on conflict
management in light of the fact that it is a basic
issue for powerful venture group execution given
the characteristic correspondence and
coordination challenges they confront.
Research Delimitations
• This study will be conducted in Private Telecom Sector.
This exploration concentrates on conflict management
inside authoritative limits and extended groups. Further it
examines clashes that are practical and how to determine
a contention before it gets to be useless.
• This study focuses only groups working in same office and
conflicts among the employees of different branches of
similar company are not a piece of this examination and
the impact of conflicts among different hierarchal
designation is not looked into rather the exploration is
done from a general point of view only. This examination
maybe stretched out to public area, conflict among
different branches and different businesses as well.
Research Questions
• The research question will be weather temporal coordination has any
significant impact on the relationship between team performance and
conflict management modes?
• Does avoidance conflict mode (a) has a negative effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination weakens this negative effect?
• Does accommodation conflict mode (a) has a negative effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination weakens this negative effect?
• Does competition conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
effect?
• Does collaboration conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
effect?
• Does compromise conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
effect?
Literature Review
• Conflict is often seen as a fight, a struggle, or the clashing of
opposite party involves conflict issues, feelings and thoughts
(within party experiences), and conflict management . Most
academic work draws a clear difference between the
occurrence of conflict, and the way it is managed.
• People in the organizations often avoid the conflicts, they do
not get involve when conflict arises or they encourage conflict
without knowing it. These situations go unrecognized as long
as we exclusively define conflict as struggle and fight. Avoiding
and ignoring conflict, or by assuming an inactive and passive
stance, may be especially damaging for individual health and
well-being, thus rendering it even more important to
differentiate between the occurrence and management of
conflict.
Literature Review
Conflict management is a function of combined concern
for self and for others. Problem can be solved between
the parties through an exchange of information about
their priorities and likings, and balances between what is
important and what is unimportant for the organization.
Desivilya et al., (2005) advanced five conflict management
approaches such as: (i) Dominating – “High concern for
self and low concern for the others”. (ii) Obliging – “Low
concern for self and high concern for the others”. (iii)
Avoiding – “Low concern for self and low concern for the
others”. (iv) Integrating – “High concern for self and high
concern for the others”. (iv) Compromising – “Moderate
concern for self and moderate concern for the other”.
Literature Review
Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy (2009) have showed five basic procedures to
manage conflict:
• Competition: “Mirrors a longing to accomplish one's own finishes to the
detriment of another person. This is mastery, otherwise called a win-lose
introduction”.
• Accommodation: “Mirrors a mirror picture of rivalry, totally offering into
another person's worries without trying to accomplish one's own closures.
This is a strategy of mollification”.
• Involvement: “Is a methodology that speaks to a bargain in the middle of
mastery and settlement. Both sides surrender something, yet both sides get
something. Both sides are respectably, yet not completely, fulfilled”.
• Collaboration: “Mirrors a push to completely fulfill both sides. This is a
critical thinking approach that requires the combination of every gathering's
worries”.
• Avoidance: “Includes impassion to the worries of both sides. It mirrors a
withdrawal from or disregard of any gathering's advantage”. (Hughes,
Curphy and Ginnett, 2009)
Literature Review
• Temporal activity is an activity which ensures that
the distributive actions will take place at a proper
time, each in relation to the activity’s other action
as well as relevant set of neighbor activities.
• This type of coordination is intervened by
temporal coordination artefacts and is formed
according to the socio cultural context. The
definition has three main parts: It is telling us that
temporal condition is an activity, the motive of
this activity is to integrate distributed
collaborative actions,
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Coordination of activities in time is essential to
exactly determine when some outcomes will
be accessible relative to other actions and
activities or an event will occur(Bardram,
2000). The effective way for this is to establish
well define deadlines and starting time
according to some socially shared and external
time measurements (Bardram, 2000).
Theoretical Framework
Research Hypothesis
• The hypotheses for this study are:
• H1. Avoidance conflict mode (a) has a negative effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination weakens this negative
effect.
• H2. Accommodation conflict mode (a) has a negative effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination weakens this negative
effect.
• H3. Competition conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
effect.
• H4. Collaboration conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
effect.
• H5. Compromise conflict mode (a) has a positive effect on team
performance, and (b) temporal coordination strengthens this positive
Type of Study
This research will be quantitative research and
can be characterized as exploratory research,
hypothesis testing and descriptive research.The
research tends to explore a new problem area
which has never been explored in Pakistan,
describing the problem with the context of
previous researches, explaining further if there
is a relationship found between the selected
independent variables and dependent variable
and the role of selected model on this
relationship.
Population
• The population for this research will be the
Project Managers, Program Managers and
Project Teams members working on different
projects within in the Telecom industry of
Islamabad & Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Sampling

• To collect the data for this research we will go

for non-probability sampling using convenient
sampling technique.
• A total of 300 questionnaires will be floated
with an expectation to receive 250
appropriately filled.
Proposed Data Collection
• This study will inspect the relationship of the Conflict Management
Behaviors with Team Performance including the moderation impact of
Temporal Coordination. The questionnaire will be adopted from Mitzi
M. Montoya-Weiss (2001) and Rahim (2002). These questionnaires are
very comprehensive and measures all our variables. Questionnaire will
be used to measure the intended Conflict management behaviors,
Team Performance and Temporal Coordination.
• Measurement scale:
• Likert scale will be used; each item will be scored on 5-point scale
from 1-5 (1=Strongly Disagree & 5=Strongly Agree).
• Time Horizon:
• The time horizon for this research will be cross sectional because
the data is collected at one point in time from different companies
operating in telecom industry and will never be collected for the same
research again.
