• At the end of the 19th


century, John Harvey
Kellogg fought against
sedentary lifestyle and
promoted a diet rich in
grains, nuts, fruits,
vegetables, yogurt and
soymilk. His "spa" received
the rich and famous and
for 60 years he was the
most popular doctor in the
United States.
• In 1878, Kellogg opened the Battle
Creek Sanitarium and began
promoting its rules for a "biological
life." He treated executives,
celebrities and presidents at the
San, as his care center was known;
His most devoted followers were
known as the Battle Freaks. He
sold special foods, unusual
treatments, exercise machines,
books and albums to his clients.
For 60 years, Kellogg was the most
famous doctor in the United
States.
CORN FLAKES

•One day a patient broke her dental bridge by eating


a piece of toasted cake. Kellogg decided to develop
a pre-cooked cereal. He spent many hours testing
how, using steel rollers, to make corn or wheat
flakes, until eventually the invention came out. From
its genius sprouted the cereal industry in the United
States, which transformed the breakfast of millions
of Americans. It was however his brother W. K.
Kellogg who made this invention an international
industry.
SAN BATTLE CREEK

• At its peak, the San employed a thousand


people, cared for up to 10,000 patients a
year and cultivated 161 hectares of
vegetables and fruits. The place had its
own dairy, canning and food manufacturing
facilities. Eventually, Kellogg added a
complex with 20 cabins reserved for the
wealthiest customers.
