LEED stands for

Leadership in Energy
and Environmental
Design (LEED)
About LEED

LEED is a third-party certification program

launched by US Green Building Council
(USGBC) for buildings and communities
that guides their design, construction,
operations and maintenance toward
sustainability.
Minimum Program Requirements for a
LEED Project

Must be in a permanent
location on existing land

Must use a reasonable LEED

LEED Certification Levels

Certified 40-49 points

Silver 50-59 points
Gold 60-79 points
Platinum 80 and above
Which Certification Level to Target?

It depends on many thoughtful considerations:

No room for Emotion or attitude of competition.

First of all setting the target should be based on the

feasibility report by the LEED consultant (usually a LEED AP).

Target should be based on economic feasibility, site

conditions, additional costs involved in implementing the
strategies , and on many other conditions.

Recyclable Building Materials
When opportunities for reuse or
salvage are exhausted, recycling is the
next level.

Deconstruction and
construction of waste
materials that can be
recycled include:
Asphalt, Cardboard,
Carpet, Concrete Drywall,
Wood etc.

ALL THE ENERGY USE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE
EXPLOITATION OF THE
BUILDING ARE
IMPORTANT !!!
For example:

How the occupants get to the

building?

How much energy is used by

vehicles?

Is there any pedestrian access?

Is there
LEED any accessall
takes to these
quality transit?
into
account !!!
For compliance with LEED specifications and in order
to optimize energy performance, following simulation
and analysis need to be done:

• Building energy modeling and simulation

• Day light simulation, etc.

This will answer to the question, how much energy

will be saved during exploitation of the building.
These simulations will give insight into the building’s
performance when in operation.

The consultant will suggest to make additions,

changes and corrections to any documents prepared
by the consultant’s team necessitated by errors and
omissions.
For design and selection of equipment and
appliances, LEED follows the following principles:

Efficiency First

This has been followed in all design considerations

The Consultant has covered the following to meet
the LEED specification Design :
- To Reduce the cooling load the design provides to low-e-glass,
vertical and horizontal louvers on the exterior of the building
envelop.
- Steel structure has been considered not only for only for structural
reason but also for the fact that steel is considered recycled.
- To reduce the wastage of water, all fittings of the bathrooms, toilets
and urinals will be WaterSense® labelled and certified.
- On grid solar system is considered as source of renewable energy.
- LED lighting fixtures are considered for energy savings
- VRF inverter system for HVAC is considered for energy efficiency.
- Grey water recycling system is considered for water efficiency.
- Rain water harvesting & recycling system is considered for water
efficiency.
in Electrical Design:
Energy Management
Power Monitoring & load Sharing
Energy metering system in each floor for lighting load, plugging load, cooling
load, domestic & fire pump load
On grid solar system interfacing with lighting load
PC / Web based central control system by using IBMS

Lighting Management
Energy saving lighting / LED is provided
Automatic day-out light for Outdoor (wherever applicable)
Occupants motion based light in common spaces (stair, corridor, toilets, etc.)
Emergency lighting system for uninterrupted power supply
HVAC system:

VRF inverter system is provided for greater efficiency

Man load:  1 Ton  for 20 people

Electrical appliance load: 2 watt / sft
Fresh Air: 5 cfm /person
Air change: 8 ACH/hr for parking
Air change: 15 to 20 ACH/hr for toilet
Plumbing system:

Indoor water use reduction

• All fittings of the bathrooms, toilets and urinals will be

WaterSense® labeled and certified.
• Grey water recycled system for flushing
• Rain water recycled system for flushing
• Separate lines for potable water, black water and grey
water
• Building’s water consumption metering system
Integrated Building Management System (IBMS):

Web-based monitoring & controlling:-

 Temperature
 Humidity
 CO2 level
 Water
 Power
 HVAC
 Lighting
 Elevators
 Generators
 Sub-Station
 Fire detection & protection system
 Solar system & UPS
 Pumps
Intelligent Parking Management System:

• Parking lots availability display with locations

• Automatic parking barrier
• Guidance to parking
• Ultrasonic detector lamps for parking
LEED does not address the safety issues, however as a
common requirement by Building codes …

Fire safety system:

•Addressable automatic alarm system
•Automatic sprinkler system
•Stand hose pipe system
•Fire separation exists
•Emergency exists light
•Emergency exists sign
•Extinguisher (CO2 & ABC dry powder)
•Emergency power supply for fire lift
•Diesel pump for fire fighting
•2-hours fire rated coating in structural steel
During the construction stage:

• The construction firm will produce the Construction Pollution

Prevention Plan which will be reviewed by the LEED Consultant.

• Waste items will be categorized into groups and a waste

management plan will be prepared by the consultant.

• The contractor will submit the HPD and EPD of the materials used
which will be reviewed by the LEED consultant for submission.
The way forward ………

RAJUK authority appoints its representative (e.g., PD)

The owner’s representative assigns LEED Administrator

(usually the LEED AP from the consultant’s team)

Based on the economic feasibility study, the owner sets the

suitable certification level through an integrative process
meeting with other stakeholders.

Owner registers the project with GBCI through LEED online

portal with the help of LEED consultant

GBCI appoints a reviewer

The way forward ………

The LEED consultant reviews the design and prepares

documents for submittal to GBCI through LEED Online portal

The consultant reviews the construction works and suggests

measures for covering LEED requirements

Owner makes payment to GBCI for review

LEED team submits documents for review

The LEED team responds to the comments made by the

reviewers.

Based on the credit points earned, project is CERTIFIED
