Seol-nal (Korean New Year):
• the first day of the lunar year, which fluctuates between
approximately January 19 and February 20, is
commemorated. Coinciding with this date, the families
gather to celebrate the entrance a new year. Normally,
everyone tends to dress with a traditional garment (the
hanbok) and get used to a game as well as entertainment
similar to dice, but that requires some chopsticks. In the
same way, it is traditional to perform obeisances (sabae) to
the oldest members, as well as to pay homage to the
ancestors. The typical dishes of this day are the tteokguk and
the manduguk.
• Jung Gu (or Juyangjeol): It is celebrated the ninth
day of September in the lunar calendar. It is
considered that on this date the union of two yangs
or positive cosmic forces takes place.
• Dongji (winter solstice): It coincides with December
22nd. Throughout this day, Koreans carry out
various ritual practices to chase away bad spirits
Chuseok (Harvest Festival)
• In this celebration, which is celebrated on the
fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month
(between September and October), the gods
are thanked for the fruits of the harvest. The
Chuseok is a holiday, as it is the day before
and the day after. As a general rule, courtesy
visits are done as a sign of respect for family
members and gift exchanges are held
Festival of the Fireflies of Muju
• The Muju region, where the festival is held, is one of the
places designated as Natural Heritage of Korea because it is
the habitat of the firefly.
• Visitors have the opportunity to see fireflies in their natural
habitat during a night tour. Also, camping in the forest and
spending the night between them is allowed.
Also see the lanterns that fly and ask for wishes, seeing the
lights of heaven.
Butterfly Festival (Hampyeong):This festival is a celebration of
the wonders of Nature, with butterflies and live insects. It
offers exhibits of butterflies. a study of the magnificent flight of
butterflies, as well as specimens of butterflies and insects.
