Business Memo
 What is a business memo?
A business memo is a short document used to
transmit information within an organization.
Memos are characterized by being brief, direct,
and easy to navigate. They are less formal than
letters but should maintain a professional, succinct
style. Often, the purpose of a business memo is
twofold: to identify a problem and propose a
solution. Other times, memos may provide or
request factual information. They are designed to
accommodate busy readers who want to find the
information they need from the memo quickly and
easily.
 How do I write an effective business
memo?
The following 5 strategies help readers to navigate
business memos easily and quickly:
 Present the main point first: This may be the
single most important guideline about the structure
and content of memos. Readers should quickly
grasp the content and significance of the memo.
 Maintain a professional, succinct style: The
style of your writing should be appropriate to your
audience. In this case, your audience is your boss,
your coworkers, or both.
 Create a very specific subject line to give the
reader an immediate idea of the memo’s
subject and purpose: The subject line should
orient the readers to the subject and purpose of the
memo and provide a handy reference for filing and
quick review.
 Provide a summary or overview of the main
points, especially if the memo is more than one
page: Often referred to as an executive summary, the
first paragraph of a long memo or message serves
these functions:
• Presents the main request, recommendation or
conclusion Summarizes then previews the main facts,
arguments and evidence
• Forecasts the structure and order of information
presented in the remainder of the memo
• Like the subject line, the executive summary provides
a quick overview of the purpose and content of the
memo. The reader uses it to guide both a quick first
reading and subsequent rapid reviews.
 Use format features, such a headings, to signal
structure and guide readers to the information
they’re seeking: Headings provide an outline of the
memo, enabling the reader to quickly see what the
major topics or points are and where to find them in
the memo.
 Standard Memo Heading
Though the format for a memo may vary from one
organization to another, the standard heading consists of
a series of clearly labeled line that convey key
information about the memo’s contents and its
distribution.

Date: The date on which the memo is distributed

To: The person(s) to whom it is primarily addressed

cc: Name(s) of anyone else who receives a copy

From: Name of the writer, usually followed by his/her

Subject: or Re: Concise statement of the memo’s topic

 Summary
‘A Stench of Kerosene’ authored by Amrita Pritam is a tale
of suffering and injustice in the rural areas of India. The
author tries to relate the life of young Indian wife to the
reader in such a way that it leaves them feeling pity. Within
it there are elements of superposition, superiority and
ancient traditions. They have been married seven years.
Guleri and Manak are loving couple who live with Manak’s
mother in small village in India. Guleri cannot give birth and
her mother-in-law desperately wants a grandchild. Guleri
pouring kerosene over her body and setting fire to herself,
after hearing about her husband bringing a second wife
during her absence. “Guleri is dead”, Bhavani said in a flat
voice. “What!”. “When she heard about your second
marriage, she soaked her clothes in kerosene and set fire to
them. Manak, mute with pain, could only stare and feel his
own life burning our. If a woman fails to fulfill this role, she
is not successful in marriage and is rejected. Thus Manak’s
mother escapes a reasonable percentage of being accused
for bringing a second wife for her son, Manak
 Thoughts
This story story very well illustrates the complexity of
a family life, love and guilt. Manak feels guilty for
having a baby with the woman because he loves
Guleri immensely. By accepting (though reluctantly)
his mother’s wishes, he fails not only himself, but
also Guleri and the phenomena of love. Sadly, this
story is a great story, it enlightens us, some people
are in fact being treated with these dilemmas and
harsh conditions, which we, in the west, think of as
unthinkable- they happen every day – every single
hour. The story follows a number of different aspects
and traditions that are implemented and closely
followed by Indian community. The story is an insight
in to the sexism of the Indian traditions which have
represented woman in the society in a different light,
and how they can be mistreated, and how these
tyranny infested customs can oppress woman.
