• Great jump from previous projects
- Master thesis (20 ECTS): ca. 20.000‐30.000 words, figures, tables and reference
list (40‐60 pages, excluding appendices)
- Research master thesis (35 ECTS): ca. 30.000+ words, figures, tables and
reference list (60-80 pages excluding appendices)

Tip I: Be realistic

• Not enough reference class forecasting

• Add 2o% to your estimated time when planning

Tip IIa: Make it concrete
• Make a monthly & weekly planning, define milestones

• Make them “SMART”

To make sure your goals are clear and reachable, each one should be:
• Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
• Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
• Achievable (agreed, attainable).
• Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
• Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).

Tip IIb: Make it concrete
• Use a Gantt chart

• Implement simple project management tools, e.g.: Trello / Evernote / old-

fashioned notebook, calendars (google, outlook, 365)
• Commit to the deadlines: tell others, start a tandem or ‘peer pressure group’

Tip III: Share it with your supervisor
• Process/projectmanagement gives you extra level for communication and steering
• Do think of you supervisor as your ‘client’ – keep him/her informed about
progress/risks
• Discuss with supervisor which format works for the two of you (this can and
probably will be different per phase)

Tip IV: use the Pomodoro Technique
• Time management technique developed by Francesco Cirillo
• Breaking down your work into focused, uninterrupted blocks of approximately 25 minutes
• Short breaks after each 25 minute block of writing; longer break after four Pomodoros
• Record your progress in a log book
• Various (free) apps available

Conclusion: be the captain of your ship
Failing to plan is planning to fail
• Use planning and projectmanagement to steer through your (research) master
thesis

Done is better than perfect

• Marry Content and Process

Planning takes time, no planning takes more time!
