1 Feb 24 1. Review of Unit Outline and Expectations

2. Introduction To Theory and Research – Parts 1 and 2 – There are six parts to this unit. This unit will introduce you to both Accounting Theory and to Ch1 Deegan
Research (within Accounting). It will be relatively general and many of the ideas formed will be the subject of future topics. At this point you should read
Craig Deegan’s book – chapter 1. I have also included two papers one looking at a critique of accounting theory and a second looking at the nature of
research. You should read each to form a basic and introductory understanding of these areas alongside the lecture slides and Deegan, ch.1.

2 Mar 2 1. Introduction To Theory and Research – Parts 3 to 6 – There are six parts to this unit. This unit will introduce you to both Accounting Theory and to Ch1 Deegan
Research (within Accounting). It will be relatively general and many of the ideas formed will be the subject of future topics. At this point you should read
Craig Deegan’s book – chapter 1. I have also included a further paper for you to consider looking at creative accounting and fraud.

1. Workshop Activities: In this week workshops will commence. A number of papers are provided which consider accounting theory and research and the
development of theory from an historical perspective. A word document identifies the questions that need to be considered.

Do not try to read all the articles in detail – that is why you are looking at the questions first to get a sense of the information you might require – and then you
will skim the articles to find it, and then read those sections in detail. This may be difficult to start with – it takes time! This will apply to ALL workshop
activities.

3 Mar 9 The Financial Reporting Environment and Regulation: this topic looks more closely at Financial Reporting and links to the various regulatory theories that we Ch 2 & 3 Deegan
have previously noted. Brief reference is also made to Bushfire and Ideology Theory. Arguments for and against regulation are explored more fully, types of
regulation that might be imposed. General comments on the adoption of varying accounting methods, power of the accountant and professional judgement are
further explored. Accounting standards are used as an exemplar of the regulatory approach, in particular, the development of accounting standards at a global
level. Finally regulation as a political process is explored. Issues of objectivity, and neutrality are noted and questioned. There are 6 recorded components to this
topic.

Workshop Activities: The intention of this workshop will be to explore regulation including accounting standard setting. You do not need to read all of the
articles. Please look at the workshop activity first.
