SPREAD VOICING

Spread Voicing
• Spread voicing give the richest sounds of any of the harmonization
techniques.
• When writing spread, must be particularly concerned te give each
instrument to balance and blend with the other instruments.
• Spread allow more opportunity for creativity and for error than the
standard voicings.
• Spread voicing are different than 4 Part soli where this voicing more
focused on accompanyment harmony. Soli is more on harmonizing
the main melody.
4 Part spread with given lead
• To start arranging harmony, give a lead note from the harmony voice then start to
harmonize it according to the procedure.
• Root of the chord is given to the lowest voice unless the chord symbol indicates an
inversion. Example Cmaj7/E (E is the inversion note for bass)
• Doubling should not be done for 4 part spread unles there is Triad chord or given
lead note.
• Interval between 2 lowest voices in the harmony will be perfect 5th, major, minor
or diminished and the major or minor 10th.
• The interval berween any 2 of the upper voices can be as small as a minor or as
large as a major 7th.
• The middle 2 voices are usually assigned one of the following pairs of chord tones.

• 7 & 3 (10)
• 5 & 3 (10)
• 6 & 3 (10)
• 5&6
• 5&7
• (10) is the interval according from the root notes bottom to the 3rd
interval which is octave higher.

• Each answer must write under the chord as (5&3(10)) or other
answer which is more suitable.
• You may write on a piece of paper and scanned or you may use any of
the music notation software.
