At the end of the session, the student
will be able to:
• Learn what is modernity and its
relations to social science
• Modernity is a concept that deals not
with the shift in the physical and
material conditions of society but
also with mental, and behavioral
shift with people.
• This was economical & ideological
phenomenon challenges west (North
America & Europe)in late 19th & early
20th century.
• Hence, the modern times is characterized by the
presence of urbanism & capitalism.
• Because of various factors such as imperialism,
globalization, and political & cultural expansion
of western powers and highly industrialized
nations, modern living has also become the model
of life in other parts of world.
• Nevertheless, modernity is not only about society
developing economically & technologically and
ushering dramatic change in population but also
there are underlying philosophy, behavior and
values that guides institution, modes of thinking
and social relations.
