DATA MINING
• It is drawing out of hidden predictive data
from huge databases.
• Various technical approaches including
clustering, studying classification rules, data
summarization, locating dependency
networks, detecting anomalies, and evaluating
changes.
STEPS OF DATA MINING

1. Develop an understanding of the application, of the relevant

prior knowledge, and of the end user's goals.
2. Create a target data set to be used for discovery.
3. Clean and pre-process data .
4. Reduce the number of variables and find invariant
representations of data if possible.
5. Choose the data-mining task (classification, regression,
clustering, etc.).
6. Choose the data-mining algorithm.
7. Search for patterns of interest .
8. Interpret the pattern mined. If necessary, iterate through any
of steps 1 through 7.
9. Consolidate knowledge discovered and prepare a report.
ADVANTAGES OF DATA MINING
• Helps to unearth facts about customers from available
database.
• Crediting/Banking
• Research: makes the process of data analysis faster.
• Law enforcement
• Marketing
• Transportation
• Medicine
• Insurance
• Enhances efficiency and saves money
LIMITATIONS OF DATA MINING
• They are not self sufficient applications.
• It can not identify a causal relationship.
DATA MART
• It is a data repository that may derive from a
data warehouse.
• It is smaller in size than the data warehouse.
• There are two approaches to organize data in
data marts:-
– Database data mart table
– Multidimensional database
