• ASSESSMENT
– Does the child have cough or difficulty
breathing?
– For how long?
– Count the RR
– Look for chest indrawing
– Look and listen for stridor
• CLASSIFY
DOES THE CHILD HAVE COUGH
OR DIFFICULT BREATHING?
• Difficulty breathing
– Unusual pattern
– Fast, noisy, or interrupted
• No cough
– Proceed to diarrea
– No further questions
• YES
– Next question
FOR HOW LONG?
• Chronic
– More tan 30 days
– tuberculosis, asthma, whooping cough or
another problem.
COUNT THE BREATHS IN ONE
MINUTE
• child must be quiet and calm
• Tell the mother you are going to count her
child’s breathing
LOOK FOR CHEST INDRAWING

Note: Only the soft tissue between the ribs goes in


when the child breathes in  intercostal indrawing or
intercostal retractions NOT CHEST INDRAWING
LOOK AND LISTEN FOR STRIDOR

• harsh noise made when the child breathes IN


• swelling of the larynx, trachea or epiglottis
(CROUP)
• child who has stridor when calm has a
dangerous condition
• Put your ear near the child’s mouth
• Wheezing noise when breathing OUT 
