Writing the Introduction of a

Thesis or Dissertation
Basically, the INTRODUCTION has four parts:
1st Part: OVERVIEW OF THE TOPIC

● Present a brief background of the VARIABLE or PHENOMENON of the


study
● In 2 paragraphs (5 to 6 sentences per paragraph) present an overview of
the topic you are going to study
● This should be in your own words; however, you have to cite the source
since it is not your idea; somebody have published an article already
about it
● Proper APA citation and referencing format should be followed.
● Each paragraph may have 1 or 2 citation/s.
Basically, the INTRODUCTION has four parts:
2nd Part: FACTS, STATISTICS AND FIGURES ABOUT THE TOPIC

● Provide recent facts/statistics/figures about the variable or phenomenon


● You may have 2 to 3 paragraphs (5 to 6 sentences per paragraph) for this
part;
● The 1st paragraph must focus on global setting and present salient
facts/statistics/figures of the research topic; these are the recent findings of
published researches (cite the source properly);
● The 2nd paragraph must focus on ASEAN setting (with proper citation)
● The 3rd paragraph must focus on national setting (with proper citation)
● Do not copy paste; you have to summarize your readings if it’s too long and
paraphrase if it is too short (with proper citation)
Basically, the INTRODUCTION has four parts:
3rd Part: SITUATION IN THE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT OR LOCALE

● Present your observation of the variable or phenomenon of your


study as it happen in your research environment or locale.
● Present clearly the situation in your research environment (it could be
problem, issue, or even something new that needs to be documented
for analysis)
● Since this is your personal observation, no need for citation.
● This part can presented in 1 or 2 paragraph/s.
Basically, the INTRODUCTION has four parts:
4th Part: JUSTIFICATION TO CONDUCT THE STUDY

● Present here your personal background or connection to the research


environment
● Present here your reasons of conducting this study
● Present also the future output of the study based on the findings. It
could be and action plan, enhancement plan, intervention plan, etc.
● You can 1 or 2 paragraph/s for this part
