• The past simple is used to talk about actions which
happened in the past.

• Expressions of time:
last night yesterday
last week in 1998
last month when I was a child
last year (…)

REGULAR VERBS: Subject + Verb -ed…


Last week I played a football match.
Yesterday I listened to music.

IRREGULAR VERBS: Subject + Verb (2nd column)


We went skateboarding last weekend.
I broke my arm.
Spelling rules
• Most verbs: add –ED: listen  listened

• Verbs ending in –E, add –D: live  lived

• Verbs ending in CONSONANT+Y: change


Y to I and add –ED: worry  worried

• Verbs ending in CONSONANT + VOWEL +


CONSONANT: double the last consonant
and add -ED: stop  stopped.
