APA FORMAT

American Psychological Association (APA)

• APA format is the official style of the American
Psychological Association (APA) and is commonly
used to cite sources in psychology, education, and
the social sciences. The APA style originated in a
1929 article published in Psychological
Bulletin that laid out the basic guidelines. These
guidelines were eventually expanded into the APA
Publication Manual.
APA Format in Citation
• When using APA format, follow the author-date
method of in-text citation. This means that the
author's last name and the year of publication
for the source should appear in the text, like, for
example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference
for each source should appear in the reference
list at the end of the paper.
• If you are referring to an idea from another work
but NOT directly quoting the material, or making
reference to an entire book, article or other
work, you only have to make reference to the
author and year of publication and not the page
number in your in-text reference.
• On the other hand, if you are directly quoting or
borrowing from another work, you should include the
page number at the end of the parenthetical citation. Use
the abbreviation “p.” (for one page) or “pp.” (for multiple
pages) before listing the page number(s). Use an en dash
for page ranges. For example, you might write (Jones,
1998, p. 199) or (Jones, 1998, pp. 199–201). This
information is reiterated below.
• Regardless of how they are referenced, all sources that are
cited in the text must appear in the reference list at the
end of the paper.
In-text citation capitalization, quotes, and
italics/underlining
• Always capitalize proper nouns, including author names and initials:
Jones, D.
• If you refer to the title of a source within your paper, capitalize all
words that are four letters long or greater within the title of a
source: Permanence and Change. Exceptions apply to short words
that are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs: Writing
New Media, There Is Nothing Left to Lose.
• 2. APA Referencing Basics: In-Text Citation
• In-text references must be included following the use of a quote or
paraphrase taken from another piece of work.
• In-text citations are citations within the main body of the text and refer to a
direct quote or paraphrase. They correspond to a reference in the main
reference list. These citations include the surname of the author and date of
publication only. Using an example author James Mitchell, this takes the form:
• Mitchell (2017) states… Or …(Mitchell, 2017).
• The structure of this changes depending on whether a direct quote or
parenthetical used:
• Direct Quote: The citation must follow the quote directly and contain a page
number after the date, for example (Mitchell, 2017, p.104). This rule holds for
all of the variations listed.
• Parenthetical: The page number is not needed.
Sample of Citation in APA style
As mention of Jelen, P. et.al. (2007) in the study
entitled “Pizza Aroma are Agreeable”, the most
important constituent of pizza as well as appearance.
On the statement above mentioned that the aroma
and the appearance are the sensory used by the
consumer to process them for the high expectation
on the product.
As mentioned by Marquez (2009) stated in their
study entitled “Study of Aroma Ingredient Bound as
Glycosides in Tomato”, noted that the fresh processed
tomato contains more than 400 unstable compounds.
It is due to complex mixture of compound that the
attribute aroma of tomato arise where in many of
which have low threshold flavors. Aroma can add to the
appetite of person who gets through the product.
Eggshell calcium presents healthy, balanced calcium
due to trace amounts of other minerals contained in it.
Eggshell calcium is probably the best natural source of
calcium, and it is easier for your body to digest and absorb.
According to the Dutch researchers, have reported recently a
highly positive effect of eggshell calcium (with added
magnesium and vitamin D) on bone mineral density in a
scientific study (double blind, placebo-controlled). Laboratory
test and measures of bone density were carefully made in
these studies. The eggshell supplemented group had
measurable increases in bone density in their hip bones, after
one year. Wilder, D.(2015)
• 1. APA Referencing Basics: Reference List
• A reference list is a complete list of references used in a piece of
writing including the author name, date of publication, title and more.
An APA reference list must:
• Be on a new page at the end of the document
• Be centred
• Be alphabetically by name of first author (or title if the author isn’t
known, in this case a, an and the should be ignored)
• If there are multiple works by the same author these are ordered by date, if
the works are in the same year they are ordered alphabetically by the title
and are allocated a letter (a,b,c etc) after the date
• Contain full references for all in-text references used
